Who do you think the selectors will send to Dublin to make up for a disappointing Hickstead? We are now looking an almost definite for relegation unless a miracle happens. Who's being sent to save our souls? who's left to choose from?

they decided last night so we should hear soon but i think Tim stockdale, Ben, Peter Charles and probably Robert Smith. i dont know whter they will risk Peppermill in case it rains and becomes a bog. and we need to finish four points better than Belgium which means we must be no worse than 4th whatever happens and if Belgium get points possibly higher.
Sweden are the other team at risk but as they areseven points in front of us we would need to win to beat them and hope they didnt make the second round!!

Geoff B hows he going to save us from a fate worse than death. What form does he have? Is this the confimed team? Its not looking good for the europeons!!!!!

Rosinus had just 1 time fault in the King George, and did a clear in the previous Super League NC. Who else do you have in mind?

to be fair to tigerduck, SJFAN, geoff also knocked up a cricket score in Aachen...... and vangelis jumped just as good as geoffs horse in the King George.......

Sorry you did not answer my question is this the confirmed team! If so im surprised , has in needs of desperation I would of thought they would have called for peppermill as ground is renouned for goog going not like Hickstead, thats if peppermill is fit!

Rosinus had 8 faults in Aachen - not great, but certainly not a cricket score. Vangelis S probably has more scope than Rosinus, but he regularly does worse in his 2nd round than in his 1st. I doubt Derek has made up his mind about the final 5 for the Europeans and will do so as near the deadline as possible, which is what Robert Splaine is doing with the Irish team. The Irish have their likely team members spread between Gijon this week and Dublin next week.

Our Dublin team has not been announced. Newspaper reports said Peppermill is not fit yet, and I believe is not expected to be - a great shame as he was in good form in May.

In was enough to contribute to our failure to make the second round though wasnt it! and i dont disagree about Vangelis but I am not sure if there are things afoot we dont know about!
And offically robert splaine may be saying that but I hear that two are are definately on for the irish and the our guys said the selectors were meeting that night as we held the press confernce to decide who was going to dublin so I suspect the riders already know even if we dont!

Sorry - thought I just had. It has not been announced so no, it's not the confirmed team. I am not a fly on the wall at the BSJA or wherever the selectors meet!

Whilst I normally would not have a problem with Peppermill & certainly think John is one of the worlds best riders I have to say I do not understand how the partnership could be considered. They have not been out & about much therefore their is no form to be judged! IMHO this happens far to often & is one of the reasons the ordinary members get annoyed as to why a combination is sent to an important event without recent results to back up the decision. Not going out to competitions is one hell of a way of making sure you dont get bad results. We can not afford our horses & riders to get selection off the back of results over 1 year ago & often less recent than that.

Robin Hood, Corlato and one of Peter's would appear dead certs for Dublin ( I was going to say no brainers but somebody might have got upset).
Who is left to choose from? Peppermill would walk into the team as far as I am concerned but if not fit then that leaves Geoff, Robert, Nick and outside bets Philip and Guy to choose from.
In Super Leagues this year Rosinus has had 12/4, 8 and 8/0. Vangelis has had 8/0, 0/8, 12/13. Nemo has had 4/4, EL/5 and 8/4. Romanov has had 5 and 4/4 and Torinto has had 8 and 8/4. Oh to be a selector.

But I do think Rosinus is starting to find his form and that the partnership is beginning to cement, whereas Vangelis looks a little tired after the long season.

I just hope they get it right... for once. To be relegated from the NC will have MASSIVE consequences for British SJ and it's suffering quite enough already

We are doomed! It’s going to take nothing short of one big miracle. It actually shows just how lacking we are in top riders in the UK, not to mention top horses (although there are a few and I do rate Pall Mall as one of these, especially seeing him jump at the weekend)! Germany and Holland have so much young talented riders being given the chance AND proving themselves. What has happened to the UK on this regard?

I think a new team manager is needed personally.

I think it's more of a horse power problem. We don't have enough people with the necessary financial resources interested in supporting our talented riders. Sport horses cost a lot more to buy and compete than they did in former times, and as we know, big sponsorships in this country have virtually dried up. Germany and the Netherlands, and of course Belgium and France have a big breeding industry, and far more international shows. I honestly don't think there's much another Team Manager can do for us until the sport again has a higher profile.

Its a double edged sword though really, if you do have the money to fund a top horse it seems you would have to place it with a certain couple of riders to get a chance of a team place, and they may not be the riders of your choosing. So in that regard you could argue that the manager has some control over introducing new riders into the team or not as he / she sees fit.

If the team place was offered to those with the right horses that would offer another selection angle, not just hoping the people usually in the teams can cobble together a fit string at the right time.

I think it's always the case that the Team Manager (not just Derek) takes the brickbats. It's not true that a horse has to be placed with one of such a select band of riders to get selected IF the pair have good enough form e.g. Charlotte Platt and Paulien at Hickstead last year and La Baule this year. Sadly the horse wasn't fit to jump in the Nations Cup at the latter and doesn't seem to have returne to competition since. Ben Maher has only come right to the fore in the last couple of years.

I accept what you are saying but I still do think if you place a horse with a Whitaker, Smith, Skelton or Billington you have a far higher chance of selection. If that wasn't the case how come these names have been the backbone of the NC teams for as long as I can remember. And how come all the top horses gravitate to these riders, there's no doubt they can ride but are they just extremely lucky ? Lets face it they aren't the most charismatic people around so it can't be their scintillating conversation and witty repoirtee that makes owners flock to them.

We have already identified people who could / should be given an opportunity and yes a couple of different faces pop up ie Ben, Charlotte and now Peter C and Will F but they tend to dip in and out rather than be the backbone.

If the youngsters aren't given a chance who will be left to take over the mantel when the oldies retire. There are a lot of good national riders who need to be given an opportunity to prove themselves at the next level. Besides why wait for a rich owner, if they are not forthcoming get creative, why not say use a £1 from every entry fee to fund a pot for good horses.
