Whos going to the JAS at Merrist Wood this weekend?

I have my two entered - still debating whether or not it is a good idea to go! Will come and cheer you and Win on even if I leave my boys at home :)

Hola!

Lexi - look forward to seeing you there.

I haven't done JAS before either and Winnie has developed a fear of mirrors despite having mirrors at our yard...? Could be interesting too!

i was gonna enter but horse having physio again tomorrow so gonna miss it. planning on coming along to watch though as never seen one before so be good to know what it's like to see if i enter next yr. do you get given times? if so, let us know when and i can come and cheer :)

Hi Star

We do get times! I am 9.45 and Lex is 11.17. I haven't done it before so think I will get there nice and early to watch a few. I put it into you tube and watched last years which was handy!

I am hoping to watch Lex too but I am going to be tight for time. I have a whole afternoon of viewing properties. Last time I was in a rush and turned up to view a lovely clean house in yard gear... agent didn't look too keen! :b

See you tom

Hi,

It was ok but not fantastic. When we arrived we went and watched a few go round and we saw a lady fall twice, one lady completely smash a fence and loads of refusals and horses being eliminated or retired! It didn't bode that well.

Our results were rubbish on paper to be fair but I was really pleased with him. I was there to just school him round so I took it really steady. He was really well behaved, warmed up nicely and was surprisingly mature for him.. he's 6 and usually quite daft. He started really nicely and jumped the SJ bit clear. He landed on the wrong leg a couple of times so I bought him back to trot to get a nice canter again and so it wasn't exactly stylish. When we got to the XC bit I stopped sitting up and was more in the XC position but he got a bit long and had a plank and a gate. he jumped fine though and the video we took was really cute. I'll try and upload it later for some cc. We got 18 time pens too but then I was coming back to trot and concentrating on good approaches and a nice rhythm so I was expecting that.

I wish I had treated it all like a SJ round though and blooming well sat up during the XC bit. SJ is def out weakness at the moment. I have found a good trainer though so hopefully we nail it before our first event wish should be tweseldown.

I don't really understand how the JAS style score is worked out. Does anyone know?

I took him to Rosehill xc the following day. It was his first time over an xc jump this year and he was bold and strong and felt ready to go. He jumped round all different types and happily over PN so I came away happy.

I can't wait to get going again!!!

My very reliable little chap was well and truly shell shocked by the whole thing and went incredibly green on me resulting in a stop and some poles, and a generally sticky round - although suprisingly the style score wasn't too horrendous

I'm not too bothered at all as he is such a cracking little horse who knows his job so well - and I think that was half the problem as it is a very different ask of him and it worried him! I also realised that I don't think I have ever jumped him indoors so not at all bothered because his primary job is to event - and boy does he do that well :D

Well done guys!

Not the same thing at all, but I did the Eventers Challenge at Sands Farm and rode my first ever round at 2'6"...less scary than I thought but the track was very wiggly with 17 jumps...a bit like a scurry!

Mine was sort of ok, sort of horrendous! She had a couple of real 'back off' moments resulting in a couple of stops and in hindsight i really should have stepped the canter up a gear before fence 1. I thought the course looked simple in terms of fences, but the angles and lines to some of them made it very looky and spooky. I will definitely try and go to the one in feb as well.

It sounds like your round was similar to mine! My horse is usually as bold as brass so it was very uncharacteristic. With hindsight I should have been bolder but I am usually being towed around courses. I'm not quite sure why so many horses were so shell shocked !

Thats good. Its quite nice having so many fences I think because you can get into a really nice rhythm... albeit a wiggly one in our case too!

I popped down to my car during lunch to find the camera with the video on its not there.. really hope its on the side in the kitchen and I have left it somewhere because its the OHs camera.. eekkk!

Merrist was my JAS debut. It walked and looked so much easier than rode.

Novice SJ was very up to height. I unfortunatley had problems at the corner, horse just didn't lock on and it totally confused him (corners indoors) though cleared everything else, very annoying. There were quiet a few ponies (pony riders / juniors) so the striding was very short for those with big horses. The course caused problems all over the course (in the BE100 / Novice classes I watched) and it wasn't just a "style" competition.

I was a bit disappointed with style sheet, I expected to have a few more notes about improvements and notes throughout the different marks too (a bit like a dressage sheet?). Hasn't put me off though, will be corner practising before then next one in Feb.

I didn't get mine I asked a few people where to get them from and no one gave me an answer. I then just took Winnie home. I agree about it being fairly tight. Mines 17hh and a lot to keep together.
What kind of comments were they giving then?

You could get them from the secretary office after the class had finished, I only got the sheet from the BE100 class, didn't wait around for the novice class to finish. I've left sheet in lorry, I think there was 10 sections a mark out of 6 for each (total 60) then taking the difference (lower mark) as your score. I've no idea what the sections were though, mine was the same mark through out. Then a very short sentance at the end mine was about upper body position.

Oh right. I think I'll do the one in Feb though but do both the 90 and 100 and see how he feels. He's a big old boy and tends to jump better over bigger tracks but Saturday was his first outing. I'll remember to get my sheet next time and have a look at the comments.

I have seen my pics... not the best!!

Hiya i went and watched some of it in the afternoon and i think everyone was very brave!
Saw some amazing rounds I thought the bounce looked horrid but hardly saw any issues with it while a few people had the planks down and the second to last fence after the triple.

Anyway was fab to watch well done all :)

you didn't have to wait till the end for sheets - they put them out fairly soon after your round. I did see yours Squizz (wasn't delving, it happened to be lying on top) - they only write one very short sentence though and the rest is just a mark out of 6 for various aspects of you and horse. most people were getting mainly 3's (with the odd 4 )which was satisfactory or something like that and so a penalty mark of somewhere in the 20's.

Oh dear I wonder what it said :b
However, I have it on video and its ok. He's green and I have bought him back to trot a couple of times when he's landed on the wrong leg. I watched it with my instructor and she said you can't always ride a green in the perfect position and that I was doing what she had taught me to do. Hey ho.. onwards and upwards I'll get the next one!
