Success stories please :)
I have found a field with shelter/stable to rent :)
She can stay out 24/7 yayyy , no livery yards making me keep her in all year round, and no more bitchy people making my life hell, stealing my things and being nasty.
Just me and the ponies :)
Has anyone else done this and are you happier?

Yes, I've done it plus I've got the added bonus of keeping them at home too now.

I absolutely love it, my horses seem happier too, the only problem is I miss riding out with other people (I had also moved to an area where I don't know anyone)

We did exactly the same. The fact that there are no rules other than your own is a god send! We went from working livery too!

I'm moving one of mine at the end of the month to a small paddock that only has a water trough! I just can justify £35 a week for a Shetland pony which is barely riden in the school! So worried about how I'll cope keeping him itch free and making sure he still gets his regular baths throughout the summer :-(

I've recently moved my two from part livery with limited turnout to living at home. They are out 24/7 and look much happier and healthier. No yard gossip and politics and can do everything my way. I've some friends stabled locally who I can hack with and have met other people locally.
It's the best thing I've ever done, I hope you'll be as happy as I am.

Wow thanks everyone, Im looking forward to no mucking out (although lots more poo picking )!! and just spending time with her rather than getting caught up in arguing/stealing/general yard rubbish!!!
I have friends nearby who I can hack with too which is great!

Not done it, but just to say lucky old you. I love the yard I am on, but would love my own place. Both my daughter and myself have this fantasy of walking out of our back door and feeding our two, whilst wearing our jim jams. Dream on.

Enjoy!

Ah yes my dream also :)
Its not at home, id be renting it from someone, but still its the next best thing I suppose :)

We used to rent a cottage on a livery yard which was great, I was forced to
move our 2 horses after my gelding attacked a mare, the YO wouldn't seperate the sexes, so I found a new livery yard with much better facilities.
It was the new YO that told us about our current place, knowing we were
looking for a house in this area. Unfortunately this place came with a barn,
stables and grazing of 5 acres, so she lost her livery.
We can see the horses from most windows in the house, visit them or do morning feeds wearing dressing gown and wellies, it's lush.
The downside is the big field is not accessible to vehicles, so while poo
picking I am also hand harrowing, the landlord has said we can put a gate
in the fence, so that will improve. The barn is also very windy at times, but no place is perfect. We go up the drive and straight onto the moors

Have my own yard & fields tho not at home.
Nearest house is half a mile away from the yard (4 miles from my home).

The ONLY drawback for me is having someone to help out in the odd personal emergency - and having holiday cover. Luckily at present I do have someone who will 'oblige' :D but in the past it was a problem on occasions.

Remember - in the winter, your torch, waterproofs & wellies are your best friends :D:D
In the summer you will often be 'missing' from housework/cooking or other family duties :D

Hope you enjoy it!

I went from renting my own place with 6 acres to ahving to go back to livery ...YUK !!! but amazingly a paddock came up for sale just down the road from me which I bought .... so happy :D:D:D:D:D

only downside is I do miss the company but poo picking with my dogs happily running around and ponies happily munching ... awesome

Then you'll notice that the fence is broken and needs mending, the watertrough has flooded, the gateway needs gravelling, the weeds need strimming, the muckheap needs tidying/disposing of, the gutters need clearing, harrowing, rolling, poo picking ...

My share horse lives in a field with a shelter and her not so little son, I have been out of horsey land for a while and it is so nice not feeling like I am being judged (it's mostly my own paranoia!) The owner is lovely and relaxed :-) We go out together sometimes which is really nice as I have only ever had other shares to hack out alone.

When I am finished with uni I am planning to get my own but I think because I have never fully owned a horse I should start out on a livery where I can have advice on hand, and I have never really done shows so it would be great to have some show buddies to go along with! I am a bit worried because I have seen a lot of bitching on yards before (usually about the owners of horses I loan rather than towards me) but maybe a smaller yard wouldn't be so bad?

Some of the liveries round Cambridge are so astronomically expensive I think I could enlist the help of a mobile groom to help me out if I need it and still be better off :-)

I really dont wish to squish anyones dream as have done this and am very happy on my own with my two boys , but remember you will have to give up precious riding time to do maintenance and I have found it has made me rather lazy. we no longer compete and my rising 4 coblet has only been sat on. If I was on a yard he would be doing allsorts by now. Guess you sometimes need someone to put the pressure on!

Katie_southwest it's fab - you'll love it! I see to my two every morning in my PJs, a bobble hat, headtorch and wellies and there's noone to laugh at me! It's hard work - Enfys is right, you're always seeing things that need doing, other than riding, BUT as long as you've got friends locally to hack out with, I'd say you've got the best of both worlds.

Enjoy :)
