Whos horses are still fully rugged?!

Mine's naked and has been for about a month now. He is out in the day and in at night, but he is in a barn so its a little warmer (its been dropping to 2-3c some nights!!)

He's a 20 year old welsh D who could do with losing a few pounds no rugs!!!

Mine only had his on after the snow when it was all slushy and disgusting....and in the stable again at the same time, as one part kept flooding so to keep him clean.

That was it....been naked other than that. Sold his rugs a few ago as were just sat there.

Its crazy, a month ago ours were in heavy turnouts still, with several feet of snow around them, two weeks ago I got them in middleweights, two days ago into summer turnouts, then yesterday took them off and turned out naked! Even though its really warm in the day, there was a good frost on the muckheap this morning and actual ice across the water trough in the field at 8am.

I'm Northwest too, and mine's been naked for nearly three months now. In the snow she had a no fill turnout on. At night a fleece alone in the stable. She's warmblood with a very fine coat. Coped fine, and looks better than ever.:)

Over rugging seems so sadly common reading these sorts of threads. Very bad practice.:(

Agreed. I walk past our ex LWVTB boys field most days - last week he was in his HW turnout with neck (which he has been wearing all winter) on a sunny day, then naked on a cold rainy day.... He was naked today (v warm here today) and close to the fence... his ribs were far too obvious for my liking :(

What can you do - their horse their rules at the end of the day!

Boyo has been in fly rug in the day and LW at night (out 24/7 now) His owner has the final say though and he lives at her home so she'll often do a rug change if the weather changes.

I know, so frustrating.

There's an ex livery who now keeps her horse across the road from ours, and the today for instance, it had a fly rug on throughout the day, until peak fly/midge time this evening, and she took it off!!

Interestingly, her friend who keeps her horse in the very same field, has not yet managed more than two days of taking her horse's mediumweight rug off (despite the other horse having it's fly rug on and it being up to 15 odd degrees most days)

My tb out during day in a light wieght he's had it off during day in sunny periods when it's been nice ( not many times ) he comes in at dust and wears a medium wieght overnight
My others went unrugged this week .
I know my tb now he just does not do well if you let him get even a little cold.

There really should be a test before you are allowed to keep horses - sheesh I'm not saying I'd pass, but I would at least be grateful to learn a few things throughout the process! Unlike your ex livery and my ex LWVTB owner - Ignorance is bliss it seems - ggrrrr! *head* *brick wall*

I certainly wouldn't have taken my rugs off in the snow, but we had it very bad. Two miles down the road it was a different story, we are a bit in the wilds! And I don't do rugs if I don't have to, I'm too lazy! I do have a very fizzy, sweaty horse though, so don't take the rugs off too early as I don't want her coat to grow back or I end up washing off all the time in cold weather, which I don't like.

I sometimes have fly rugs on by day but not at night - the only reason my mare needs one is because she reacts to fly bites, midges don't bother her.. That said, there aren't many flies around yet, am enjoying the part of the year between mud rash and sweet itch, without flies, when the ground is not a clay bog nor a baked hard clay..

I'm taking it on a day by day basis. The TB is wearing a 200g combo and a 200g standard turnouts at night then the top layer ones off during the day if dry and mild, he's been naked about three times in three weeks, he just stands and shivers bless him :o

My unclipped one is naked urging the day if dry and rugged at night or if it's wet in a 180g standard neck, my fully clipped pony is naked if warm and dry during the day then her heavyweight goes on at night if out or her 200g is on if wet and in at night.

It's switching on a daily basis right now, can't wait til the weather settles, although the pony is lipped out all year round and wore her 100g lightweight for most of last summer

Benny boos went nekked tonight... He rolled within5 mins.. Certain message that he is chuffed with his nekkedness :D

Mine are currently naked by day as it's 15°c and sunny, and well rugged at night as we're still getting a frost! (all tb's, not clipped but pretty much lost winter coats except the old man)

Baby has been naked all winter but in fly sheet fir last 2weeks but big lad as been having rugs reduced for last couple weeks and now naked woop woop . its been a long long winter for him this year and so good to see is body now lil :)

Both of mine, one hunter clipped and one fully clipped have just been in fly rugs last couple weeks. If it's wet or very windy they have a rainsheet put on too.

The hunter clipped one still has fuffy legs but summer coat has mostly come through on both now :)

When it's warm and dry enough, Kal is going out naked during the day (bit of a pain b/c he's grey and competing and it's harder to keep him clean, but I'd rather he was happy), but at night in his stable he is still rugged up and will be once he is out 24/7. Yes, there is grass in the field, but it's still chilly/cold here overnight and he has come out of a long winter rather lean so I'd rather err on the side of caution until the temperatures pick up.

horses now all out in no fill sheets :D I don't have any intact fly rugs at the moment so these are doing a good job of keeping midges off. Think the flies are going to be bad this year :( had hardly any last year where I am

Mine is out naked. It's been lovely in my area for the past couple of weeks now and she has ben sweating even without a rug.

A couple of horses on the yard have been going out in medium weights with under rugs rug on still, I hate to think how sweaty they have been getting when mine's been getting hot without a rug.

Harley who is fully clipped has only had his fly sheet on during the day for the past two weeks. and since monday has only had a fly sheet on at night too has was getting to hot/sweaty in his rainsheet.

If they forecast rain at night, he will have his rainsheet back on though, purely because he is fully clipped and out 24/7

Just to say - today, all of the horses on our yard are out naked . . . shiny and happy and getting much-needed sun and air on their coat and skins . . . even the very precious Advanced Dressage horse and the two elderly gents (30 and 34) . . . except one. He is always rugged. Not because he suffers from a skin complaint, is particularly sensitive to biting midges/flies, etc. . . . but b/c his owner likes to keep him clean. I know it's not my horse and, therefore, not my business - but it did make me sad seeing him rugged up today :(.

Its currently a day by day thing - they have had a few naked days the last couple of weeks, and their lightweights on other days - its more the wind factor than anything here at the moment, and today its raining so they are out with lightweights on.

Definitely a day by day thing for me too. Mine is fully clipped and is naked during the day as its been so warm and has been in a 100g turnout at night but last night he was naked as it stayed so warm and he was way too warm to have a rug on! His summer coat has just started to come through and he's going on summer grazing tomorrow where theres lovely long grass! :D
