Who's your groom?

My OH is my groom. He is great and he ranks venues according to their catering facilities!

He finds dressage a bit boring so sometimes tell him to stay at home as I can easily manage but eventing is SO hard on your own.... just having someone to take the horse off you so you can sort yourself out is so appreciated.

Jeez didnt realise you were so close, I live in between Barnsley& Holmfirth kind of way, so if you ever need a hand at the locals and im not competing give me a yell

I don't compete, but when I went to this yearly show across the road from our yard mum was fantastic! She loved holding the pony and telling her to behave with me bless - but she wouldn't dare touch there mouth, so she usually ended up the other side of the showground!!

She got up extra early to help me with this and that, turns up looking like a farmer and brings along a moahoosive picnic - it always turns out to be a lovely event!

The funniest bit was when she literally, when I was warming up, turned into a PC mother - absolutely hilarious - all she said was 'Kick that bloody PONY *insert full name [she uses it when she's cross] here* It was very very funny, was falling about the place - especially as she isn't horsey!

If I did start competing I would take my non horsey parents, and anybody else who wanted to come! - I can't drive yet, and they are a great help when it comes to fetching this and that, they are absolutely great.

Last year when I had my own horse my dad and I would help each and just hoped our times didn't clash! Now I ride my dads horse, he has to drive me anyway and is the biggest help. If we go to BE mum comes along as well, she finds local shows to boring now!

Either a useful friend or go on my own.
To be honest I prefer to do the "hands on" stuff myself. I just like having a friend for support, company and someone to call upon when something desperate is required.
I hope to get back to competing this year and I think I will be on my own quite a lot. I'll cope

My sister and I groom for each other at events as we very rarely compete 2 different horses at the same event (in fact since Ive had Tilly the only competing Ive done has been when Ive stolen her pony for a quick clear round!!)

Hopefully I'll be getting a little box in a few years (no point until Tilly is ready to start going out as we can get the odd lift if we take Mickey out) so things may change but with very unhorsey parents we tend to stick together!!! Ocassionally our wonderful mum comes too but she tends to stick to running round after us and horse holding rather than sorting the horses out.

me or my best friend when she can come but she cant always. dad drives the lorry and holds the horses (but if they move he doesnt know what to do!!)

if your super organised going alone isnt too bad if your horse is sane. if youve got a nutter etc its more difficult. altho its always handy to have someone else come along.

i find its good to take it in turns with friends to groom for each other - then some will always owe you one when you next go out

My friend and I take it in turns, I have a lorry and drive so one week I take her to dressage, drive and groom. The next time she grooms for me, works really well and we take it in turns to have fun grooming without the pressure of competing.

I too like Icestationzebra's other half, judge a venue by its catering. Oldencraig do yummy burgers but I find Cobham Manor overpriced, however Stilebridge offer free tea and biscuits for affiliated dressage and a burger van at the weekend for unaffiliated.

Nat - just give me a day or two's notice of comps and I'll happily help you out!

Edited to say: So long as it doesn't involve plaiting up - I'm cr*p at it and you'd only let me do it the once!

ME!!

Mum comes for the company but i do everything - i can tow in june!!!!

Oh i also groom for my sister as she stresses and is a brat, so i tack up her horse and get rid of her then tack up my own and relax.

My friend helps me out as i go to shows with her and we compete in different classes and then i do the same for her.

If we are competing at the same time though (usually if there is more than one ring) then i am my own groom!!

I've very often groomed for myself which is a bit of a nuisance....

the lovely BB's groomed for me when i did my one and only ODE on Ludo (she's a star groom!!)

and Kelly groomed / photographed me when i did my one and only show on Luna (better groom than camera man!)

the local shows it's easy, but htis year i plan to BE where i don't really want to be on my own in case of an accident - it happened when I was hunting once, drove home totally concussed, and don't remember a minute of it!!!

so - anyone offering to groom for me (surrey area) this year - i'd be more than grateful...

Well I could say mum grooms for me ish... in that she unloads horse and takes off boots etc - she will fetch my number and carry the keys, put a bridle on and put the warm up boots on if necessary she is wicked at bacon sandwiches and hot coffee!
I drive the lorry, i tack up and get ponio ready to go....
However, I had Beanyowner help me at a few events last year and she was fabulous! I didnt have to worry about a thing - Im a bit of worrier i.e i like to do my own boots and saddle etc but beany did everything right.
Molineux comes to *help* although she knows she makes me giggle - shes *head groom* who stands there with a fag on the go holding winston whilst im struggling doing studs ARGHHH! the worst job *in line with clipping*
But M's support and friendship outways her rubbish Head Groom skills LMAO!!

I guess for SJing/BSJA shows YO will be my groom as mother has refused to come to any more SJing as she hate waiting around and finds SJing far too boring - but she will be there when Im doing dressage or eventing which pleases YO as she cant stand dressage.

Guess I'm my own groom. Most of my comps seem to be mid week now so OH cant get time off work. Not really a prob as lad is sensible and easy to deal with. Only issue is not having someone to fight my corner with the practice fences in the warm up (SJ).

I groom for OH and have not yet missed a comp (dressage) in 5 years. Cant as I have to drive the lorry.

Really lucky as Oh is into horses aswell lucky we enjoy different disciplines. He likes xc and hunting so I groom for him and I enjoy dressage and SJ so he grooms for me works quite well really I compete most in spring and summer and he does in autumn and winter so dates rarely clash.
