Ive been advertising my horse for sale for a while. had loads of people come and try him out and all said they loved him. but nobody ever comes back to buy him.
Are there just alot of day trippers out there or what ?
I had someone travel 3 hours up to us the other day - i took the afternoon off to meet them as they were coming such a long way. 3 of them turned up - wearing flip flops, asked me to get him out of the stabled - they then preceeded to stroke him on both sides, comment on the small battle scar he had on his head and then said ' oh i dont think hes suitable ?' I was like WHAT ?? they didnt ask to see him tacked up, ridden, trotted up ?
dont know what im doing wrong - hes a very quiet horse, suitbale for a novice rider to pootle round fun rides and riding club level at what i have been advised is a good price as hes as quiet as he is.

Ive had someone else ring up and offer £1200 ? hes up for £4000 ?

RANT OVER!
Is anyone else suffering in the same way?

don't ask

Where's he advertised? Where are you? He sounds ideal for a lot of people looking! How big is he?

I've had timewasters while I've been selling my friend's pony - people don't seem to know what they want and never have the courtesy to ring back after viewing - all they have to say is that he's not what they're looking for - but they just don't bother. (also, some don't bother to tell you they're not turning up either!)

hes on horsemart, cheshire horse, teamchasing website, saddleupcheshire.
hes 16.3hh - im wondering if his size puts a few off ??
and grey ??
12 years old, he really is a sweetie and its a shame hes sat out in the field doing nothing at the moment.

I am prepared to be shot down but if he is in the field doing nothing and is not fit and ready to go out competing people are taking advantage of credit crunch and for that money and that age they want something that is fit and ready to go and is out competing on a regular basis. Yes there are a lot of day trippers out there we have a 16.2hh 14yr old warmblood on yard for sale for £3k been there done it and is very honest but he is not out competing but he is fit and ready to go but people always seem to back off as soon as the owner says she cannot afford to go out competing as she doesn't have transport and they go and say they will ring back and never do. People are being very particular at the moment and especially at £4k.

I have just bought a WB 16.2hh 14 yrs showjumper/dressage riding club level. very quiet, pootles round the lanes, 100% everything £2500 inc loads of rugs, year old saddle, bridle and lots more.

I would say your price is too high!!!!

Sounds a great horse but too expensive at £4000, especially at the moment!

ETS Although why someone would travel 3 hours (if they actually did, maybe they told you a porky

) and not even see him put through his paces is beyond me

His size won't put people off but the price will. 4k for an unfit 12 year old that is currently sitting in a field is unrealistic. If you want 4k for him, get him fit, and get him out doing something.

I can't find your horse advertised on saddle up cheshire, but did find this one - http://www.saddleupcheshire.co.uk/index....5&Itemid=93 which might give you an idea about what a 16.2 12 year old grey is being advertised for.

There also isn't a 16.3 12 year old grey gelding for sale on cheshire horse - maybe this is the problem, the adverts aren't up so no one knows he is for sale?

I've travelled to see plenty of horses, got there to find they are not at all suitable, and I know this without having seen them ridden (one had laminitis, unknown to owner!, a couple have had visible conformation issues / old injuries that would worry me, a couple are no where near the age the owner thought they were). It would be a waste of my time and theirs to watch a horse being ridden that I had no intention of buying. I would say I ride a horse less than 50% of the time I view.

I thought the same thing for what you describe the horse as, 4K is alot, there is a 6 yo at our yard been out done bd, sj and xc, safe enough to hack out by a 70 year old but ready to go pre novice BE and fit. He's up for £4995 but they'd probably take £4.5K!

I can see where your coming from but not everyone wants a competition horse. Some would pay a high price for a solid good novice horse they can stick their OH on and know it's not likely to take off (dope on a rope so to speak). No offence meant to anyone.

Yes, 4k does sound alot, especially in this climate!

We have a lovely 16.2hh 5 yrs old grey gelding for sale at my yard. She paid £6.5k for him only a few months ago, but is a novice rider and he is proving too much for her (typical baby!) and she has him up for £5 and is open to offers!!

I put mine on H&Hand had loads of calls, sold her to the first people to call and try so well worth the money, I didnt get any numpteys either.

I sold her fairly cheaply after spending a lot of time looking at prices of comparable horses. I think you have to be realistic. Whilst my heart told me my horse was worth 4K, my head and research told me 2K!

Buyers opinion (just bought my new boy at the weekend):

whilst im all for the phrase 'cant put a price on safe' he is really pricey.

Your description fits exactly what I was looking for, but I got the horse of my dreams for just £1700

I think I got a bit of a bargain but still massive difference.

When I was looking I was looking around the 2-2.5K price bracket.

I dont know if this helps - hope you find him a new home soon xx

Someone came to view a horse I had for sale, had a quick look and said he wasn't what they were looking for. I appreciated their honesty and the fact they didn't waste my time by going the ritual of me riding him and then them getting on board. You often know straightaway if you like a horse or not, don't be offended if they know that your horse isn't for them.

I think he sounds a nice horse, but as the others have said 4K is a lot of money for what he is. I sold a 5 year old Warmblood last November for 3.5K. He was fit, he'd competed locally, never refused a jump and was a fabulous hack.

If you lower your price a bit you will probably get more interest as people are interested in quiet horses that you can have fun with. Good luck!

He sounds exactly what I am looking for but I wouldn't pay £4K for him, sorry. I am looking at the £2 - 2,500 mark and there are a lot out there for this money too.
