I purchased an 11 month old colt nearly 4 weeks ago, He was in poor condition, still has his winter fur and underweight.
I was recommended feeding him on heygates stud mix.. I give him a small double handfull of that, a double handfull of mollichaff extra twice a day, 1 tea spoon of garlic and he has a bit of haylage, hes also turned out 24/7 but its only the size of a riding paddock, not very big and due to not having much rain, the grass isnt growing..
Anyway tonight his frogs felt abit warm on all 4, is this normal for a youngster or would you stop with the feeds etc due to laminitis?
Hes putting on weight, slowly but surely.
forgot to mention, hes also on a course of antibiotics for an upper infection and hes also got 2 rear club feet

I had a scare with my pony's feet being warm so posted on here for advice and someone asked if he had been standing in the sun, to which I replied "yes". So maybe that could be the reason? It sounds as though you are feeding him right for weight gain, just a little, so I think he should be ok. Anyway, if you're worried, it would be better to speak to your Vet.
Hope you enjoy him! Any chance of a pic?!
Welcome to the forum, by the way!

It does sound as if you are feeding him quite a bit - what breed is he?

Warmth - or not - in horses' hooves is really difficult though. Every horse is different. My old threequarter bred always had warm feet and she was the soundest horse you could find, whereas her companion at the time had model 'cool' feet and was always in trouble with one foot complaint after another.

Heat in the hooves can be tricky. Also I have heard that hoof temperature is not a good indicator for laminitis. I she showing any of the other laminitc symptoms? If not is he lame at all? Could be an infection in the hoof? Also as mentioned above if it has a been a hot day and he has been in the sun they can warm up. Keep us posted on how he gets on! x
