Some substances can be bought separately through non horse companies for a fraction of the price, I buy msm from a health place on EBay it's much cheaper and I buy mag ox from intra labs again much cheaper.

What is it you are supplementing with?

*cough cough* erm....want to tell me where?! I've been getting it for £50 for a year's supply (6kg) from AviForm, but if there's any way I could up the dose for the same money, do let me know.....!

I bought 25kg for £145 because it's come out so effective in trials that mine are on it permanently like many humans take aspirin daily. It would be a saving of over £50.

Look at the ingredients and buy as "straights". E.g I never buy the branded hormonal mare supplements. Agnus castus is the main ingredient so I buy that on it's own and get so much more for less money.

This, we should start a list.

Lami and mare supplements Agnus castus.

Thrive Fullers Earth

Keratex hoof hardener. Formaldehyde

Magnesium oxide Calcined magnesite from farm supplies 25kg £15

Anti arthritis Boswellia

Any more?

Why can I buy 125kg of yeasacc for less than £2.50 a kilo when it's more than £15 a kilo from horse suppliers?!?

Anyone want to share a delivery of 5 25 kg bags?

Not close enough to do that but interested in where that is from to see if I can get someone closer to share.

Otherwise cheapest I have found for smaller amounts of Yeasacc 1026 is £36 for 4.5kg

I bought 5 sacks 3 years ago but this time nobody wants to share, though I'm still tempted.

Where are you getting yours?

If i was part of a horsey crowd of 10 interested in devising a bespoke supplement mix, no iron, more copper/mag/zinc than most etc - made with bio-available minerals and vits, and avoiding synthetic versions, i’d then find a biomed company in china who do such bespoke blends and order the necessary tonnage. A bit like a ‘horse supplement syndicate’.
The kilo price would be a tenth of common branded equine supplements. Thats including shopping and import taxes. I did a rough calculation a while back.

Me too for my 2. I keep thinking about doing this but never seem to actually do it. Since the equimins debacle mine are getting progressive earths base mix of copper, zinc and selenium and a separate dose of tri aminos, added magnesium and salt.

I’ve tried lots of pollen supplements and the ingredients that seem to work best for my mare are nettle powder and echinacea so I now just buy those.

I knew nettle was what she found helpful because she would drag me to a patch (and she’s normally pretty well behaved walking to and from field) of nettles growing on the track. Plus there was a patch growing behind the fence line in her field and I caught her with her neck through the fence all twisted like a pretzel desperately trying to get to the nettle. Put her on nettle powder and voila, eyes got less puffy, breathing less laboured and she perked right up.

Wait I’ve just read this properly. 25kg of mag ox for £15!!!! I spend £15 on 750g of it at the moment. I’m ashamed of myself for not finding this out sooner.

I would as well. Spend a small fortune on Pro-Hoof for mine and that's at a very good price because I buy so much of it.

I'm not sure anyone sells it mail order, but if you have a farm supplies store they should sell Calcined Magnesite, Calmag, at about that price for cattle farmers.

It's basically magnesite, MgCO³, heated to break it down and almost all mag ox. It's coarser than the white powder but I've never had any issues with any horse eating it.

Cattle feed is always cheaper, because most farmers are more concerned about what is in the bag, and although there are different 'total mixed ration', for various stages of growth. A calf mix which looks very similar in ingredients to a good quality coarse horse mix, is about a third cheaper.

I think Magox is the exception to the rule here.

There are 3 levels really. The one ycbm mentions which is calmag which can be bought for the sort of price she mentions; magox which intralabs sell which is magox but not high purity which works out about £5 per kg, and the high purity, low iron stuff which is more expensive.

We could have discussions about whether going for the low iron, high purity version is justified or better but in terms of price, it's not comparing like with like.

At one point i bought the high purity stuff in 25kg bags from Taycrest who make it. I was at a yard where i could split a bag with 2 other people. I saved a lot compared to buying in small amounts but it was still well over £100 and that was quite a few years ago.

I'd agree with this, except to say that there are likely to be levels of purity in other ingredients too - and this is often reflected in the price.
Also buying in bulk is not always the cheapest if you cannot store the extra in optimum conditions.
