Why are most deisgner cross breeds normally black with white bibs etc.

I have noticed over many years that many of the cross-breed dogs that are being put together under cute funny names come out a solid colours, often with white bibs.

I was wondering if anyone has any idea on why, i am guessing it's genetic somehow but not sure why.

Any ideas?

Genetics.
Yellow in retrievers is caused by a recessive mutation which masks the dominant black or liver gene. Cross one of these yellows to a fawn dog without the mutation & the recessive gene is only passed from one side so there is not masking and the otherwise dominant black (or liver) appears.

White marks occur in many breeds and in many breeds they are considered a fault. They show up less on pale dogs so using a goldie bitch with some white on her chest to an apricot poodle with some white on his chest the puppies will turn out black with white chests with the "breeder" wondering how that happened.

S4Sugar - your reply explains why our accidental cross breed (fox red lab x weimerana) turned out black!

When I heard about the cross I expected the puppies to be any combination of fox red to grey and was very surprised to see them black!

Are they? The labradoodle/cockerpoo/ have a huge range of colours Im sure there are more that do too.

there are other colours but if you search the puppy websites an awful lot of the cross breed are solid colours - even when the parents are roan or spotted etc.

Interesting genetics going on

Funny, in my area I seem to have a huge influx of brown cockerpoos, labradoodles and what not. Rarely a black, but many many browns. I do have one that comes in that's sooooo ginger that when i clipped his hair off it looked like what you'd use to make a See-You-Jimmy hat!
