Why are my horses so bad at being left behind?

Took smallest pony out for a hack yesterday leaving medium pony and cob in big field with lots of yummy grass. Did they carry on eating regardless of the fact that the pony they bully and bite and generally hate had left for half an hour? NO - they charged around whinnying, threatening to jump the fence and generally scaring the living daylights out of me and any passing traffic. Also managed to spook smallest pony so that my daughter then got spooked etc etc etc.

Same applies if medium pony leaves the roost for a quick hack. WHY do friends have horses who don't bat an eyelid when they get left, even on their own, and I have the biggest load of knicker-wetting nancies around?

Grrrrrr!!!

We have a pony that doesn't like to be caught - this year pulled her friend out of the field along with one of the others and we went for a ride without her (she had bogged of in the other direction rather than be caught) she then spent the next hour stressing and charging around (she wasn't left on her own) and was stood at the gate screaming her head off when we got back - horses eh!

Herd instinct, ours do it, even when there are two or more left at home. Silly animals. They can't live with their friends but they can't live without them :)

I have 3 horses living together as well, when they are in a routine of one leaving and coming back there is only normally a whinny when the one who went out returns.

If no-one has been out for a while the remaining two will call a bit when the other leaves / returns. However if I take the companion pony out which happens very rarely perhaps once a year for a wander down the lane then the other two scream their heads off until she returns!!

Hopefully your big and middle will get used to little leaving and coming back and stop being so silly!
