Why are no fill turnout rugs totally useless in the rain?!

Oh, see I thought they were an average quality brand! I have 2 MT rugs (HW ones) which seem to have been fine.

Just going on experience with my liveries rugs. Just My opinion for what it is worth, I go by when I have first hand of dealing with a make for my own horses or livery ones.

Shires I can rate as I now have 3 and brought one last week (250grm)for my mare very happy with the fit and they are light weight and have the *T* bar buckles which I like as I don't like the clips or buckles which I find fiddly and added weight to the rug.

OP the Shires Tempest *T* bar no fill, I now have two and they have not leaked through all this recent rain

IMO

Fal Brilliant for big chested horses (ID) and my Fal 250grm - 350grm - 450grm are now on my new ...............16.1hh big girl and fit fine. Big chest boy has Fal - 350 -450grm Ponio also has fal and shires

Shires Never used too buy but now really happy with their new design and fit and price........ fit big chest girl

Masta too tight across the chest on both my boy and girl and don't like the clips or the weight of them before the rain saturates them and they leak in short time

Buccas cannot comment not really many dealings with but don't like the clips/straps

Weatherbeeta - they are heavy compared to others and don't fit my girl

Ruggles no comment as not dealt with them

Rambo again way to tight across the chest and don't like the clips

Amigo leaked like a sieve within 1 year of purchase

Oh yes lastly this unknown make to those outside this area:

Equine Essentials ....do have their own brand and fit small budget and people are happy with them on my yard.

they are generally very well priced for those on a smaller budget

One of my livery have one and seems to fit the horse well and has not leaked yet (1 1/2 year old)

I've a shire's four season tempest with a no fill outer which leaks in anything other than a light shower. My newest purchase, an amigo hero plus 200g is the most waterproof one I've got, doesn't soak in, just sits on the top and runs off the sides and its only 600 denier.

No fill rugs often cause the pony to sweat due to retaining heat generated (like wearing a plastic mac), so they sweat a bit and there is no inner to soak up the liquid.

Must admit really like the Mark Todd rugs or the JHL ones - they fit my two TB's really well and don't have any problems with them including a lightweight which one horse wore a lot early autumn. That said have a no fill Amigo which other horse pretty much lived in last autumn or which I use as an overrug to keep thicker turn out rugs dry and that is pretty weather proof.

You first line said it all Mark Todd - cheap rugs no good. Try Shire or Fal

Agreed. I made the mistake of buying a Mark Todd lightweight for my pony. Quality was awful and it leaked. I have a 600d wetherbeeta which I bought second hand and it's an amazing rug! Same applies to the amigo mio which was also secondhand. I've since bought Ruggles no fills and been pleased with those, too.

Try Ruggles rugs, fab fit, really adjustable, very reasonably priced, 1200d, seem very strong and robust and they deliver directly in a day or two, fab customer service. I have several now and seriously rate them

My Amigo has never leaked 5yrs old washed and reproofed twice. I bought a Mio this year as a spare and that hasn't leaked either despite the sideways rain

This...and also you get condensation from body heat.
I use Requisite (Robinson's) no fills on my Shetlands sometimes and they are fully waterproof but sometimes, when it's really cold, they are wet inside from what I now realise is condensation so I pop a waffle rug underneath if necessary

Great idea about the waffle rug, but does that not get damp too??

I have the rambo's for my new forest and they don't leak. He is a very hot pony and even when clipped is just in his LW turnout unless it get very cold, he also suffers from rainscald if he gets very wet so he has to have a decent rug on him that is waterproof and not to hot.

He is chaser clipped and for most of the winter has been in this rug {I managed to get one in the sales a few years ago for £99. It takes the liner system and now it is a bit colder he has his 100g liner in and is plenty warm enough.
