Why are some people so anti-horses?

Went for a hack this morning. Was walking along the road, when my horse stopped and poohed (horror or horrors). Man appears from driveway a little up the road and says "hope you are going to clear that up". Friend I was with, thought he was joking and laughed it off. Man then starts jumping up and down (literally), swearing, shouting and being v. intimidating. We all just rode off as quickly as possible. We had a young girl on a pony with us as well, so his behaviour was horrible. Last time I rode past his house, he came out with a broom and chased me! Don't see why, he should be allowed to act like this when we were minding our own business on a public highway - but now we will go another way

Yes, I knew of people that did not like the horses doing droppings outside their driveway. If they don't like it they should go and live in town and see how that suits them! In town here you can find all number of things on your pathway after a Saturday night !! Nuff said! If they don't like rural life then why live in the country....

While there was no excuse for his behaviour, if the man is not horsey at all (or a gardner!) then from his point of view its no different to someone walking their dog and it pooping outside your house. You would not be impressed. I am not condoning his attitude at all but just trying to see it from his point. It is of course impossible for us to carry poop picking bags with us and not feasible or safe, to jump off and pick up any droppings. I think that I would of offered to come back later after your ride and pick it up, if only for neighbourly reasons. Mind you this guy does sound like a bit of a nutcase so maybe not safe to do that either

Hope you and the little girl are ok and not too shaken up. If he does try and intimidate you again, especially if you have a youngster with you it might be worth having a word with the police, just to see where you stand.

Sorry Tricksy I don't agree that she should go round and collect droppings. I think there is a big difference between horse dung and dog poo - It's much more offensive because it's from a carnivore!! What would the man do if a herd of cows were being driven along his road and leaving dung behind.....If he lives in a rural area he has to get on with it.....

I agree Mickey. I always pick up my dog's poo (I live on the edge of a village, right next to countryside area). Logistically pretty impossible to pick up your horses poo. Would need a poo backpack!!! Not to mention remounting if you are a giant like me and need a giant horse to carry you...

But yes dog poo can give you nasty stuff, I'm pretty sure horse dung can't!

This guy sounds like he is about to explode with rage at the slightest thing. Don't take it to heart that you set him off. He need to deal with life!

I used to help out with wedding carriages about a million years ago and one wedding we were picking up the bride from a housing estate and parked on a green area to unload and harness up etc. The horses did a poo and a man came out and was apoplectic with rage. We told him to get a shovel and put it on his garden! He took the phone number off the lorry and phoned the owner who gave him short shrift on the phone.

I have to say now looking back (I was only 15 at the time) it probably wasn't very nice as it was a green area on a housing estate and local kids probably played there. As we had the lorry with us we could have cleaned it up and chucked it into the lorry.

But in your case, on the road in a rural area, I don't think there was much you could do

I think there are a lot of people like this around - unfortunately. They are already so full of rage and anger that it takes almost nothing to "set them off". I used to live next door to one. He was permanently puce in the face which clashed horribly with his red hair!

I think it's ridiculous - if someone can get into that much of a state over a bit of horse poo - which is basically vegetable matter anyway - good for the garden (my hubby would have been out with his spade to chuck it on his veggies!!) and doesn't smell offensive in the slightest, then they need to seriously get a life!

Do they seriously expect horse owners to jump off their horse and scrape any offending poo into a bag on their own - whilst holding their horse in the meantime which would be a feat in itself - then remount and carry on their way??? Oh please....

i man used to do this to my auntie many many moons ago (she was about 18/19 and is now in her 50's lol) so one day she was out hacking with her best friend and the man came out in the middle of the road, waving and screaming at them to get of the roads so they went each side of him and scooped him up under each of his arms and rode a long like that for about 200 yards and then dropped him and carried on her never did it again! suppose not the best plan of action but funny!

Sorry I didn't explain myself very well. I do not agree with him at all, but I think that this is probably how he is seeing it not being a horsey person, sorry didn't mean to offend. I did say that I would of offered to go and pick it up but then again I don't do confrontation very well and often get walked over as I won't stand up for myself

My parents have a whole herd of anti-horsey people in their village - the REALLY annoying thing is that they mostly come from the new housing estate that popped up a few years ago - before that it was jsut your local small little village with lots of horsies and not too many people. I cant understand why they bothered moving to the country if they dont like horse poo on the lane!! And they have this village newsletter every month - and there were always rants from people about why cant horse riders clean up after their horses!
