Why aren’t lightweight turnouts actually waterproof?!

This whole thread just makes me feel grateful that I made the decision not to rug years ago.
I have just looked after a friend's rugged pony while they were away over Easter, so have had to make decisions regarding rugs across the extremes of that wonderfully warm weather around the Easter weekend to a huge drop in temperature and conditions over the last few days. What a stressful time! Luckily, she comes back today and I can go back to not caring about the weather in quite so much detail

He hasn’t been rugged all winter, but now his summer coat is glorious and the weather has been atrocious…

My premier equine ones are good and last years I have at least two year old shires ( it came used with blue ) that good I have an ancient extremely light Mia with works .
I only buy the PE ones now .

Another vote for Swish here, my Welshie has been bone dry in hers and it has RAAAAAIIIIINNNNED here - constantly, for weeks and weeks and weeks, relentlessly (please make it stop!!)

The problem I have with the tent theory is I've had some rugs which have let in loads of water from day one and othere that are waterproof.

I have a no fill Rambo Supreme that has only ever been "shower-proof" at best since I bought it brand new. I also have a no fill Rambo original that the rain has yet to get through, worn regularly for just over a year. I don't get this one.

Ive learnt never to buy anything less than 1200 denier. I find anything below that leaks, and I dont buy a no-fill as again they seem to leak as they need a little filling (like 50g even).

I find these rugs don’t breathe well and you get condensation on the inside %

I always tend to put something under my no fill rugs even a fly rug or a summer sheet in summer, makes a huge difference stops condensation and keeps the inside of the rug clean when it's too warm for filled liners.
