We have a pony on our yard that will just chase the rest of the hay no matter how many piles you put out, he runs from one pile to the next, chasing the others off.
My last yard the grazing was terrible and the YO refused to let us put hay out as it would ruin his grazing - that was nothing to do with the fact that he had too many horses on barely any land.
New yard has summer and winter grazing every morning this week ive put a little haylage out with my mare and she left it everytime and went digging for grass, so No we dont put any out as they dont want it!!!
Luckly hay is included in the livery so there would be no arguements!!!
Gawd reading some of these makes me love our yard! Our YO puts out large bales, two per field (max 8 horses), and charges £10 a week for grass liveries and £6 a week for stabled liveries. They all go out vaguely same hours, and if not, well, tough luck really! No one ever seems to complain! We have specific winter grazing and the hay never seems to damage the grass or anything!
We always put out hay and always have and we've had some very dominant (actually quite nasty) horses in the past! You out enough out plus some extra for the amount of horses and they really don't fight. Our 4 now still play 'musical hay piles' though! lol
Still we're lucky we make our own rules being our own field!

Unless you have individual turnout how on earth would it work on a livery yard? Unless you were expecting YO to do it for you?

We all make up 2/3 slices in a net the night before, and whoevers working puts it out in the right fields the next morning. Ours are out in pairs though.
I asked the girl tonight who said her horse was not getting any hay tonight why not..... this was the reply
"i aint waisting anymore money on this one - cant ride him - hes pulled a shoe off, anyway hes been out all day eating his head off" !?!?!
yeah eating what..... snow, ice bit of mud and what the poor thing could manage to stuff of the hay the YO had put out. oh and then she continued to say "and if the YO thinks ime paying for it shes got another thing coming - i did not ask her to put hay the field !" oh the joys of yards

One of mine is exactly the same, solution is to space the hay right out. His field mates eat more than he does, as he is too busy trying to move them on. Enough hay being put out means everyone gets what they need.

YO does ours. We pay a set price for haylage each week through the worst of the winter and that includes adlib haylage for the stable plus they put round bales out into the fields. My horse is out in a mixed herd of around 15 and they have 2 large round bales in the field. Perhaps we are lucky, or perhaps its because the horses are never allowed to go hungry, that there are never any fights. All horses are holding weight really well - they all live out
