Why bother?

Why bother having a horse if you don't see to it/ provide adequate veterinary treatment? Lady on yard has a crippled oldie, claims he has mild arthritis and does nothing to treat it. Farrier came yesterday and couldn't shoe him he was in so much pain and didn't want to weightbear on other legs. He rung the owner and told him and I've just seen her now and she's ranting that the farrier is forever misdiagnosing other people's horse and that she has spoke to the vet and 'he is fine'. (not sure how vet knows this as he never comes out, she never gets him jabbed/ teeth done/ back checked) Can I just add when this horse had sarcoids she left them for so long they grew to fist sized blood dripping lumps on his sheath. Absolutely disgusting, why do some people have horses.

If we knew that one we could treat it and there would be happier horses but that question beats me everytime!
Same with lots of other animals too.

It just makes me really frustrated and sad. I love my horses/ dog like they are my children and could not imagine them suffering in pain whilst knowing there was something I could do about it!

Sweet FA, they are not horsey and not involved in the yard. We look after his ex wife's horse (for free) as he has no idea. The only thing he is interested in is collecting livery at the end of the month.

Well he better start getting interested. He has a duty of care.

I'd call the WHW.

I'd get branded a troublemaker and be told to find somewhere else to go, trust me :(

Why do people think it's acceptable to witness cruelty and do nothing about it, because it might inconvenience them?

Passive aggressive forum posts work both ways...

I'm most concerned about being kicked off my yard and having nowhere else to go. Being the only livery on the yard think it would be pretty obvious who reported it. I was just despairing at the general lack of compassion that some people have and questioning why have a horse?! Will talk to my farrier again, maybe he could have another word with her face to face and she might realise how serious he is.

I too am fed up of people who don't look after their animals, but I am also fed up of those who witness but do nothing other than gossip about it :(

I can cope with being branded a trouble maker if it meant I was giving a voice to a horse that needed care and love. I can defend myself against hypocrites that would call me that, a horse cant defend himself from cruelty!!!

I've tried speaking to her to be met with aggression and denial. At the end of the day, Im not sure what can be done? WHW or bhs welfare team will see the horse has food and water so they're not going to seize it. Just upsetting that some people love their horses as much as others.

They may not remove the horse, but if the horse is in pain and denied vetinary treatmeant/ farriers etc then they will leave an improvement notice which has to be complied with.
Reported an old horse at yard before that was a walking hatrack under rug that got put on from october - may and just left. Water and grass in field but still left notices and had rules to comply with.

The farrier has also seen the horse, how will they know that it wasn't the farrier that contacted the WHW? I can partly understand not wanting to be the one that causes trouble, and hypothetically, if you know that the horse isn't suffering enough for a welfare organisation to do anything about it, then maybe it is a little pointless to report it, but on the other hand, if you really do feel that it is suffering, how can you not report it?

About being kicked off the yard, I would presume that that is a decision only the YO can make, not the other livery.

All of it is advice. Just because you don't like some of the bits doesn't matter.

Two weeks ago I told my landlord that his ex wasn't looking after her dogs properly. Five mins a day was all the attention they got. Fed and watered and out to a pen or sometimes in a horrible shed at night that reeks. They get fed and watered so I probably should have kept my mouth shut. But the dogs were living a misreable existence. The weeds in their pen were 5ft tall and they had worn paths through. Most of the time ex didn't even come out she got others to shlep around for her. She was always "so busy". Then why have dog? Don't profess to love them and treat them like dirt.

So guess what I got? I got a freaking telling off like no other. She absolutely had me in tears. Called me all sorts as well as interfering know it all cow and that the dogs were none of my business. Should add landlord works out of country.

But guess what? In that 2 weeks the pen has been cut and cleaned of all weeds. Shed all cleaned out and the vile cow is here at least twice a day to see to their needs, spend time with them and take them on long walks. I really could have done without the arse chewing of a lifetime but guess what? Aren't the animals better off for it. Nobody else was brave enough to get in the middle of ex's and have always been worried how the vile woman would react if you said anything. But at the end of the day it was the right thing.

Be the voice.

Aye, but well done you! :)

Well done Terri. I have also stoid back and watched neglect through fear of repercussions. ..but not now. Id rather get the flack and ensure the welfare of the animal everytime :(
Would you stand by if it was a child??
I understand what a difficult situation you are in but someone needs to be the voice for that poor horse :(

Think about this logically. You and this other person are YO's only iveries so only ones paying. If you complain and they kick you out then there is nothing to stop you really getting another agency involved and he will ultimately lose both incomes. If you phrase it carefully and point this out to said YO it shouldn't be an issue. Either way you cannot stand by and not do something. Or you could also ask farrier to do the complaint for you

JFTD, for a couple of days I felt like crap and I really felt I should have minded my own business. But then I put my big girl panties on and knew it was the best thing for the dogs. They are so much happier. So at the end of it all I'm glad I ranted to my landlord. That morning I walked by the dog shed and nearly passed out from the smell. That just wasn't right. So I called my landlord. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

So no one reported the bleeding sarcoids... The horse probably wouldn't have been removed but might have given the owner a wake up call, and at least the poor horse would have been treated ASAP, I would hope.
