Because that was the horse i wanted so i went and got it, nothing wrong with getting a horse abroad. I did look here but at the time didnt find what i wanted. Got it properly vetted etc and she has been here for the past 3yrs,hasn't infected anything!!

QR to Diesel Dog

Diesel Dog the EIRG is asking the relevant authorities to look at the Tripartite agreement and remove loopholes that allow horses to come into the UK without health certificates. This is really horses that are often too ill or elderly to travel or have behavioural issues. They do not have to have any health certificates as they are being travelled under a rule that was designed to make it easy for competition/racing horses to travel easily.

They are not really 'french meat' horses. Some of them are from other European countries that have been travelled into France to be sold. A lot of them seem to be from private homes where they have just reach the end of their useful life. As it is very expensive to have a horse PTS in France it seems that people just hand them over to low level dealers and these dealers have cottoned on that if they put them on to 'rescue' websites saying only so many days to live, some poor sap will buy them.

It may seem like the group was obsessed the the UK/French rescue sites - but that is because there was a lot of personal attacks from the people running these sites as they were unhappy with our attempts to check that things were being done by the book and that the transport regulations were being adhered to. Therefore, the group was somewhat diverted defending themselves and to be fair - sometimes attacking back.

Real steps have been made in the last few weeks in moving forward with our real aims. DEFRA have put guidance on their website and the Horse Trust have issued their press release.

Whilst the numbers are not huge - they are not tiny - it is estimated that up to 800 have been brought over in the past three years. However, it's not about numbers - as if just one of those had been in contact with one of the nasty things about like AHS - it could be catastrophic to the UK horse herd. These horses are often stopped at livery yards on the way to their new home and come in contact with horses there.

I have no issue with people importing horses from Europe. (I would have to be a major hypocrite if I had - as you know I bought a Belgian Warmblood six weeks after she came into the UK.) Personally, I just want to ensure that they are travelled in under the current regulations - shorter journeys - more rest stops etc - and that they are healthy and fit to travel and fit for purpose. I don't want to see sick and elderly horses put through horrendous journeys only to end up sold on again or having to go into UK Rescue Centres - taking up spaces needed by UK horses. Sadly, we do have plenty of horses in the UK who need rescuing already.

Many of the horses that have been brought in have been so unsuitable for the purpose that they are up for sale again. Trawl through the horses sales sites - you can find numerous horses that have proved to much for the new owner to handle and is not up for sale to 'an experienced home only'.

Possibly the title of this thread is a bit misleading. It is not the general purchase of horses from abroad that is being referred to, but the low end dealer sales and "rescues" frm slaughter which then result in sometimes unfit horses and ponies being brought to the UK. If you look at the links the OP put up they are certainly not competition horses

Jenny, I thought you were more 'street wise' ! Which statement sounds better....'Im shagging a bloke from Govan' or 'Im shagging a sexy hunk (bloke) from Rome'? The shag is probably the same , BUT, the geographical location, changes everything my dear!
