I want to have a good old rant!

I have been searching for a horsey job for what seems like forever now!

I would consider myself employable, experienced I hold up to my BHS Stg 3 and have my own horses, worked and run many yards but no body seems to want to give me a job - What is wrong with me?!?

haha....I think I must smell - a lot!!

I am based in Thursley, Fanham, Surrey.

Am registered with
Nags and Nannies
Career Grooms
Yard and Groom
Professional Grooms

I have worked at Studs, riding schools dealing yards, comp yards and run my own yards....I have references.

I think I am quite a nice person to have around, work hard and quickly, and competantly....

Have written to or phoned all local potential employers I can think of but with no joy.

No one wants me....!

Katie I agree with you!
It does seem to me nowadays that having a broad background doesn't seem to get you anywhere, I like you have worked on so many different yards with lots of different horses but I tend to find that no-one wants an allrounder!!!!
I've given up and gone freelance in my local area which is working out much better! Anyone in Herts or Cambs in need of winter help think of me lol

it certainly seems different from when i was looking about 6 years ago.
i worked mainly in the racing industry and when i put a CV on spectrum (i think it was) i had about 12 diff job offers, not just to do with racing. not to mention about 40 voicemails left from prospective employers. i also had no formal qualifications, just several years yard experience.
the yard i work at in perthshire is looking for a new member of staff, part time tho and must be able to work most weekends

I was the same, about a year and a half ago when I looked for a job I had offers coming out of my ears! But when I started looking mid April absolutely nothing! If you have an understanding OH(if one at all) and feel confident enough I would advise freelancing, lots of work out there if you hunt it down! And it gives great variety and you feel like you work for yourself, I try to put emphasis on riding work tho or you will spend all day driving from yard to yard just mucking out!!!!!

Thank you guys, I have a very non horsey boyf who would like nothing more than for me to go and get a 'proper job'

I have 2 liveries at the yard I rent which currently covers the cost of my own 2 horses.

How would you suggest the best way of going about freelancing?
At the moment I am happy to even just muck out!!

Any local contacts you have ask them if they know of anyone looking to help, as long as you are willing to travel about a bit. Put ads up in local tack shops, I found putting an ad up saying about being a kind experienced groom really helped, think sometimes people are intimidated by thinking you are some big professional! Which is so not the case............yet!
It's the right time of year to start advertising, also offering horse/house/yard sitting adds another string to your bow for when people on holidays. I do plenty of mucking but also teach a couple of lessons, school and exercise a few which means it's not just the graft but some of the fun too!
Main thing just get your name out there, the horse world is wonderful for word of mouth!
Good luck with it all!!!!!!
