a decent loan horse - or any loan horse for that matter?

I lost my horse in 2010 and my companion pony last year - due to age's of both animals there was no insurance help/payout.

I didn;t replace my horse last year due to moving area, ill husband and a few other things.

I have grazing all set (and am paying for it) but no horsey. I am looking for a long term loan (the longer the better) but anything on loan these days is like hens teeth :D

Thankfully I have a good group of friends locally that are letting me ride theirs occassionally (which is really good since I only moved here last July) but am depserate to get my own little "neddy".

Everyone I enquire about is miles away - people dont get back to you or is not described. (ok i've only got as far as viewing two who despite being told had no issues and would hack etc it was plainly obvious that this was not the case (my experienced instructor friend was agast at both) )

I've been put intouch with a few people, who would consider loaning me horses, but I personally feel that they are too much for me - more competition horses than my happy hacker/odd lesson/fun show.

Sorry this was a pointless thread I just needed a moan

Take it you've advertised on-line & in local shops? Get in touch with local riding clubs & pony clubs, see if they know of any. Have you tried rescue centres?
 
yeah adds in local tack shops/pc/rc websites etc. Unfortunately the local horse chartities have nothing suitable (i.e. can be ridden) and the chraities that do have decided that I live too far off the beaten track.

I've had a few responses but mainly people want to sell me their horses, but I;m really after a long term loan (although have livery and can afford to keep horse my buying budget isnt that great).

I know I could keep saving and buy something but in reality terms it would be another 18 months to 2 years before i/m in a position to do that again. and I don;t think I could cope for any longer - its already been 18 months.

Unfortunately there's not any decent rs in the area that I could go to for lessons there plenty of instructors (all very good) but freelance only. The odd hack out on one of my friends horses is great but I have to fit in around their plans, which is not easy when I work shifts and have kids.
 
You really don't need a huge budget when buying a horse these days as long as your willing to put the time and effort into one. My friend adopted her horse from the RSPCA last year and from yesterday the horse was officially signed over. She cost all of £250 and yes the mare came from a neglected home, but my friend has put a lot of work in and she has become a beautifully backed mare who doesn't spook at anything and has a tonne of confidence around people now. She has just adopted another youngster who is arriving in the next couple of weeks for another £200 and after a year, they get signed over again if the RSPCA is happy with arrangements etc.
 
Just had another idea- is there anywhere near you that does cheap grass/ Diy? I know a few near us that people keep horses that for whatever reason they don't ride but don't want to sell or loan far away. Might be worth going round & asking the managers of local yards if they know of any.
 
there are very few yards around me most people rent a field themselves. I have gone around the ones that are there/placed ads.

The problem in this area is there is honestly about 10 people for every loan/share that comes up (usually more). There have been a few that have attracted my interest - but owners wanted them to stay put at their yard - which I can totally understand - but as the nearest one was over an hours drive each way - I cannot justify the cost in fuel/travelling time. I have a perfectly good yard almost on my doorstep. As I work shifts and have kids - I need to keep travelling to a minimum.

I'm also looking mainly for a hacking horse (with the odd flatwork lesson/pop a log on a hack) as with having kids I can't go looking to get myself injured being out competing. It seems everyone and their aunty mary is wanting the same.

As my dear old gran said - you won't find it, it will find you - she was right - my livery yard found me so hears hoping the horse does too.

my biggest problem is I am sooooooo impatient I want everything NOW: lol
 
Try looking for something a little older if your budget is small, we bought
an ex racer 18 yr old for £500 with tack/rugs.
One of the best buys ever, I just wish he was with us for longer, we lost him to colic recently, but at that age they are beyond being stupid, or were we just lucky? we took him to the beach for the first time we know of and he loved it, took everything in his stride, I still miss him daily
