Grrg, im getting really frustrated!..when doing a 10 m circle on the right rein i can get a brilliant bend from my horse as i can put weight all the wway down from my hip to heel, buit on the left leg i can pout weight on my stirrup.why then? arnt i doing it right? the left rein or left side of me isnt all that good out i cant seem to pout weight down through my left side on a 10m circle which is altering and restricting my ability tpo get a nice bend and flex from my horse. I also find it hard getting contact with my horses sides with my left leg, i find it harder than with my right leg...anyone got solutions..grrg its really frustrating!
help#!

so in other words on the left rein i cant get my weight down through my inside leg i just go stiff and riggid and i cant put any weight down at all!
help please!!

when doing a circle on the left rein, look over your right shoulder behind you. this should help to keep more weight on your inside (left) leg and will also keep your left hip forward, as the problem may stem from the fact that you are collapsing thro left hip. I have similar problem but on the right rein, once you are aware you have a problem at least you can do something about it!! Good luck (ps obviously having lessons on the flat from someone experienced will help loads).

thank you. i find on my best rein where i can get enough weight on my inside leg i cn get a nice bend from my horse in a nice circle, but on the left rein i cant seem to out any weight on my left leg and hip and the horse just hollows into the circle and has no bend. But i will try that, thank you. xx

What has your trainer said about it? Schooling problems are normally indicative of leg/back issues. Knowing that you ride very well would tell me that it is either a saddle issue, or I would get the girls out to check for spavin/tendons.

in the horse or me

lol...its not a particular horse im jusdt talking in general i cant or i dont know how to physically put weight onto my left heel as i just freeze up. my 'trainer' or friend rather has said to sit on my inside hip and on to the ball of my foot but the weights not going anywhere. I know for a fact my left side is spazdicated

as im usually cack handed with weight distribution on my own two feet, i tend to stand on my right leg more and i dont tend to use my left leg as much as my right leg simply because i favour my right leg generally.
thanks for the advice, will take it on board llwyncwn.
p.s did u go to llanybydder? and are you going to any south wales agricultural shows soon? like llanfynydd or llandeilo/llandyfaelog or pontardulais shows? thanks xx

I think you've hit it on the head when you say you stand (on ground) habitually with weight on your right side more, Sounds like you are very right sided, we all have favoured sides. Just be more aware of how you stand and try and keep your weight through both feet evenly (off horse!).
I tighten up through my left side, what helps me is picturing my feet touching the ground, and really opening the hips up and freeing up the lower leg, if you feel it tense anywhere relax that part of hte leg and really stretch down (work without stirrups helps to unrestrict the leg)
good luck!

Hi.
I agree, working without stirrups should help as they can be restricting. Also do you always ride with the same stirrup length? As you get older your bone set changes, you might want to consider adjusting this, some people prefer to ride short, some long, also don't forget that most people, although its not noticable are slightly lop-sided (have one leg longer than the other), this too could be affecting this.
The other option is to do some non-riding excersises to strengthen your weaker leg. Your posture when not riding can seriously affect the way you sit on a horse. If your back is not aligned correctly this will affect the use of your legs.

Have you considered seeing a chiropractor (think thats spelt right lol), if your back alignment is not right they should be able to help correct this problem.

Good luck with it though.

Thanks girls, you make sense actually. I havnt ever practised it without stirrups and i will defo try that method of looking to the outside of the circle. If i try too hard to put weight on my left foot when riding i just tense it up and it doesnt go anywhere lol, but will defo give them a go thanks alot!!!!!
