Why can't some people just wait? (slight rant)

A girl that was at the yard before I was turned up today on her new horse. I've known this girl since she started riding and while I wouldn't say she was a total novice, she's no Mary King if you know what I mean. When she arrived nobody knew what to say...

a) she wasn't wearing a hat, and had hacked from her current yard about 3 miles away. Our YO has been known to go MENTAL at people for not wearing a hat (and quite rightly so! It's in the rules of the place), but fortunately for the girl the YO was down at the house and didn't see her. However the first thing I said to her was 'where's your hat?'

b) her new horse is currently aged THREE. She backed it at 2, and hacked it today a 6 mile round hack. It's very fine built (12hh and with stick thin legs), does not look mature at all, and the saddle was way too big for it. I bit my lip but if she'd hung around for much longer than she did (not long as none of her friends were at the yard) I think I may have said something. She did ask me how my yearling is and I said 'she's not doing anything at the moment as she's only a baby' but she wouldn't have got what I was getting at.

ARGH! Why can't people just be patient and wait with their youngsters? She said he's been there, done it, and is jumping and being driven. To me he looks like he needs to be turned away for at least a year and then brought back into work slowly and correctly so he can build up muscle. To top it off, her facebook later today had been updated by mobile and said that she was in another area of the city (MILES AWAY) on her horse. I am PRAYING she took her youngster home and rode out on her other horse, as for me the 6 mile hack on an immature 3 year old is way too much.

Sorry, just needed to get that off my chest. I feel better now!

Completely agree, cant see why you would need to do all this with a baby horse, this girl sounds like a bit of a muppet!

I have 2yr old who yes admitedly looks very mature for his age but so many people are suggesting i start lunging him etc - they dont seem to get it I DONT WANT TO!! sorry :)
He's my precious baby and my forever horse and i just dont see what the rush is..x

Totally agree!! I can't stand it when people do that! And then their excuse "Oh well I want him to experience a lot in his life and I want him to do it and go far before he gets old." ?!! as if all of a sudden after 10 a horse is old!! Many of the best show jumpers etc are around 12-14! Just aggravates me! It's also a common thing on Horsemart, you see a 3 or 4 year old being advertised as a world class jumper ready to go out and jump the big tracks etc.. they're still practically babies! :( xx

Annoying isn't it - we have one on our yard who believes you should "break them in" at 16 months before they get too big and strong, now she did this with one of her horses and totally wreked it - the horse wasn't mature enough and turned into a complete headcase, she sold that recently as they were scared of it - now the next one is currently being done, I have to leave the yard whenever she starts "working" the pony as I'll find it hard to keep my gob shut. She's quite hefty too and the pony is only about 13.3hh and quite fine, no-where near mature enough, although she has now just turned 2 so has been given a bit of a leaway compared to the last one. She did have her neice on the pony though last year when she was only about 13 months old, fully tacked up and leading her round the farm, disgusting.

Is this girl an adult? Is she a midget? If not, why ride an immature 12 hand pony? I don't get these baby pony-squishers!

Hmm, it does sound rather stupid and no doubt the pony will be knackered way too young and thrown on the scrap heap.

It's mad really and i don't understand it. Having just bought an (almost) 15mth old this weekend I have no intention of doing any work with him until next spring time when he will be 2 and that'll just be a case of maybe trying a roller on him, a bit of long reining maybe. Until then he is just going to be handled a lot, learn a few more manners (ie how to stand still! lol), be walked out in hand to see a bit of the big bad world and maybe (depending onhow he goes) he may get taken to the odd local low key in hand show type thing just for experience.

Why do people want to rush these things? If they want a horse to do stuff 'now' then why not buy one ready to go?? Really stupid.

On another board I frequent there is a horse trainer on there who has a 2yo filly of a stock horse type he got from another board member. Today he posted that he was on the filly for over 3 hours, it's her 8th ride ever, and neither member saw a problem with it, seems a lot of people don't. Very sad.

I know who you are talking about....Personally I never used to get involved.....I just used to let things like this go over my head....as hard as it is....Some people will always test the boundarys!!!

My YO has a few four y/o who are only just hacking round the estate (about 15min hack) nannyed (or hindered!!) by her 6 y/o...
I think people should build up slowly there's less chance of problems arising!!

What an idiot, although some of the people around here fail to surprise you with their extent horse knowledge

ETA: if you don't mind me asking which area/village does she come from and where did she claim to have been on facebook?

Glad I'm not the only one who thought she was an idiot! She's not tall, but looks very big on the pony.

siant - I know, you're right. She just took us all by surprise just turning up!
