why can't waterproof rugs actually keep out the water

Most do, regardless of Denier. There is no truth in the idea that a 600D won't be waterproof. The most common reason is that your horse has simply got a little too warm and sweated up a little. Having worked in the industry before retiring, I have vast experience of this problem, and am now a doddery old woman with recall!!

Sorry but I don't agree with this at all!

I can certainly tell the difference between my horse sweating up and a rug leaking, especially when they are both stood there shivering and soaked through in their brand new Rhinos

I agree with sane_and_sensible that it's worth paying as much as you can but having had 2 Rambos that leaked followed by 2 Rhinos that do the same I think something has changed at Horseware. Their old Rhino rainsheets didn't leak even after 5 years of use and their winter rugs (all Rambo) don't leak either.

The shires rug I had on little tb is 600 Deneywhatsit - She was soaked through and shivering her skinny little arse off.
I know lightweight rugs aren't (usually) fully waterproof, I just wasn't expecting such heavy rain. It's annoying.

I use Bucas Smartex Rain...pretty good... And if you have a pony, very reasonably priced :o

^This is the best LW rug that I have. It has always been totally waterproof, even in torrential rain and must be over 5 years old now. :)

I also have a Rhino LW (green check) and that has never leaked either.

The two LW rugs that I had that are useless (not even showerproof in fine drizzle  ) are the Bucas Sunshower and a Premier Equine.

I have a Rambo LW and its brilliant. Expensive but so worth it. Friend has a few horses and has FAL, Mark Todd and Rhino and they have all been fine.

I also have a FAL and my horses melts in it. It is waterproof though.

Yes, with the 'stay dry lining'. Wonderful, as you can put it straight onto a damp horse. :)

Mine is the old style, I managed to get it in Rideaway's bargain basement years ago. I've never washed it or anything and it still looks 'new' after it's been rained on. ;)

This is mine (yes, she is in the garden :p )

I bought one for my filly on ebay for £40 last winter, it was new too! Hopefully you'll find a bargain too. :)

I found I had a dry cob under my no fill Weatherbeeta this morning :) But then when I got horse number 2 in she was wet under hers. They wear the exact same rug, its just that horse number 2's rug is a bit older.

Last night my horse was naked, she came in dry. Friends horses were in mastas, they came in damp and cold as they couldn't dry off with their rugs on.

I hate mastas, useless turnouts but I have been very impressed with my Derby House LW.

The Rambo light weight (shells) actually do have a very thin felt type layer between the inner liner and outer (discovered when one got ripped). Have 2 of these for over 3 years and no leaking to report.

Here's hoping. I guess it's winter now mind you. Or it seems to be judging by the weather. Should probably not worry too much about light weights. It'll be time to dust of the heavy ones soon

Am pleased to report the weatherbeeta had managed to keep out the monsoon rain we had today so he is still in that with his fleece under for tonight. Stupid weather!

Well I have to say that my Amigo 600D Red rug, you know the one that everyone had a couple of years ago, has never leaked yet. I wash and re-proof it every year and its never let me down.

I found this thread as i am having a 'debate' with weatherbeta at the min. I purchased 4 med-lightweight combo turnouts at the same time 3 x 6'9" and 1 x 6'6" and one of the 6'9" and the 6'6" is pouring in rain across their backs.

Ihave sent them pictures and they just keep saying that my horses must've been sweating. As someone else on here said, you can tell the difference between a leaking rug and a sweating horse.

They have asked me to test them by pouring water on them, i told them that it only appears to happen under heavy rain and they say that waterproof is waterproof regardless of the amount of rain... now yes, that may be the case, but substandard waterproofing might stand up to it for a while but not constantly.

They also claim that it may be running in around the neck.. Now i know full well that my horse stands with her head down in the rain and for it to leak around the neck of a combo she'd have to be gazing into the heavens whilst it poured down.. not the equine behavior i am used to!

Has anyone had any luck with sending rugs back? I am told i may be charged an inspection and return fee for my sins!

Back to the original post though, I have amigo lightweights and all of my horses stay dry in these all the time, regardless of how heavy and prolonged the down pour!

Amigo for me too - never leaked! I wash and re-proof myself one year and then get them done professionally the next. They are about ten years old now and still fine. That said, I think it might depend on the shape of the horse as the better the fit, the drier they seem to stay. I also think they need reproofing every year - friend's horse wears the same Amigo rug in 3" bigger and gets wet but then her rug hasn't been reproofed for about four years.

That would really cheese me off.

They ought to learn the importance of customer service!!

Can't you stand your horse by the horse and hose the rug on his back till it goes through. Do it on video and then they can't dispute it ;)

Jess, I have a LW Amigo (& detachable neck) in a 6'9" for sale if you want one :p

Still too mild IMO to be putting rugs on. I think my horses are better off getting rained on and being able to dry themselves rather than getting them too warm in a rug.

However I have found that my original Rambo rain sheets (with the blue net lining) and Bucas Power with no fill do not leak.

I haven't started to rug yet, horses have plenty of cover (both on their fat arses and under trees :D) to keep them warm but I found my amigo quite good, not brilliant but what you'd expect for the money.

Will be looking into that Bucas too, good rugs are worth their weight I feel!

I have found that lightweight rugs just were not man enough for heavy rain even though I gave mine 2 coats of separate waterproofing!! I gave up and now use a Weatherbeta medium/lightweight rug, it is brilliant!! :) :) :)

You wouldn't say that if you'd seen BH shivering out in the rain without a rug on in the middle of the day! I wouldn't dream of rugging Nits but he seems to be particularly feeble. Which is odd when you look at what a tank he is.

It's actually cold enough at night now that BH will be in a warm rug before you know it and my problems of waterproofness will all go away. There are only about two weeks a year he wears a LW due to his patheticness.

Silverbreeze, I can't really suggest anything but that would drive me bonkers.
