Why Can't You?

I'm a fairly new user of Deosect and I've applied it initally as per the instructions, ..but as I'd got some of the solution left over,..I've been using it 'as and when'!..and it still seem to have a kick to it ! :)

I'm sure the initial application is the one that works the best,..although I must admit I've seen a lot less flys and my horse has been a lot less hassled by them since I've been using it,..which is great!

In answer to your question OP,..i'd be inclined to agree with EmmasMummy.
 
Thank you for replying. This might be a daft question but can it evaporate out of a spray bottle? I wouldn't have thought so.
 
Ha...not daft at all and to be honest,..i'm not 'chemistry minded' enough to be able to answer it!!! Sorry Lelly. Someone else may know the answer to your question though, hopefully. :)
 
I dilute it in a bottle then i have a supply for a while and easy to spray on, it still seems to be as affected being left in the bottle for a while
 
I've been using deosect now for about 5 months on my tb, it seems to work about as well as anything else does but over the last couple of months he has come to hate being brushed with the harder brushes and over the last couple of weeks the skin around his sheath, eyes and nose has started to peel and flake away. I have been applying the deosect as suggested on the bottle every 4 weeks ish and then topping up some areas with another fly spray as I didn't know you could keep the deosect (which I now will do :)) Could this be related to the deosect being too strong for his skin or as someone else suggested is it a reaction to where the flies have been getting him more or someone even suggested sunburn?!

No problem. If he has pink skin around those areas it could be sunburn. I wouldn't mix fly sprays myself, just stick to one sort.
 
Well my boy seems happy enough the way I'm using it...and with no ill effects either, which is obviously good!

I'm happy to stick with Deosect and my 250ml tin will be lasting me quite some time I think as the flies, especially the horseflies have died off a lot now which is a relief as I get bitten and react very badly to the pesky gits too.

I've mixed my own concoctions in the past with neem oil etc,....but this year has been pretty bad for flies, so I looked for something else and went with Deosect.

I'll continue to use it on an 'as and when' basis I think as it seems to be doing the job just grand :).
 
When the spirits/solvents evaporate, the active ingredient will be more and more concentrated. Aside from the bottle aspect, it's much more likely to cause a skin reaction. Solvents do evaporate in plastic spray bottles over time, the rate of which increases with temperature. We used to use a lot of 20 % ethanol in a cold room lab and would replace the stock once a week, or else we'd end up with just water! I don't know what's in deosect, but depending on what the dilution factor is, it could take a long while before you end up with undiluted deosect again!
 
It eats right through the plastic. Even if it doesn't get right through it will have partially melted the plastic container, that means you're then spraying a liquid contaminated with plastic polymer and all the associated nasties.

Thankyou, hes a very dark bay so doesn't have any patches of pink around there which made me doubt the sunburn! I think it could be that I'm mixing them and if other people have found it okay to spray as and when I may give this a go :) thankyou!
