Why chose the breed you have?

I'm a sucker for a coloured so when I was horse hunting I wrote a "dream" list of what I was looking for the key criteria being coloured, a gelding and irish and H ticked every box. Took one look at his pretty face and it was love.

I bought an Eriskay. Like you wanted a native and one big enough to be mother/daughter share. Did my research and they're allegedly wonderful children's ponies. I love her to bits, she has eventually been a fabulous friend and hunting/PC pony but boy oh boy, they tell some porkies on the breed site, TYPICAL mare and TYPICAL native, stubborn, willful, loyal, intelligent etc, actually couldn't recommend them high enough if you enjoy a challenge!

I have had my tb mare for 14 years, love her to bits but she has uber fine legs, so I have bred her to full ID and how have a super ISH that is just a tad more sturdy :)

Lusitano - Bought her for the breed's dressage reputation, their character and intelligence :) One of the best horses I have ever owned!

Arab - The other best horse I have ever owned :) Not bought based on breed but for his skill as a good teenager's allrounder when I was younger :) He is fiery and full of life :D But safe as houses

Friesian - Having owned all sorts of others for years including warmbloods, I was lucky enough to own the most wonderful WB. When he went, I decided I could never replace him, so I wasn't even going to try, so I thought I'd try one of those 'Black Pearls', because they look beautiful (yes, I am that shallow!) and apparently they can do dressage. So far, so good......

I was looking for a Connemara X when I bought Cam and that's what he is. I wanted something with reasonable paces for dressage without being too hot, but that was fairly hardy and not too precious to keep. I have exactly that and am very happy with him. :)

Welsh - 'cos I had welsh mountain ponies as a child and those little hairy characters were kind enough to teach a callow kid how to behave around horses........

now have Sec D, we just seem to 'click' (and they have a great sense of humour and are very easy on the eye)

I have an arab mare. My last horse was 3/4 arab and my horse of a lifetime. After I lost her after 22 years, I decided I wanted a purebred so took my time and found my mare. She is quite simply amazing. She is safe but at the same time a bit quirky, she doesn't stress about being in or out, with company or by herself and she's stunning too!! She is also not a mud monster thankfully as she's grey! She is quickly becoming a second horse of a lifetime!! I also have a soft spot for welsh section a and have had a shetland for the last 17 years too!

Wasn't really looking for any particular breed with my two, the welshie was perfect for what I needed when I was 16, fiery, jump anything, not interested in dressage or schooling (just like teenaged me) and is very economic to run - great for when all your money from your part time job goes to the pony.
The baby is ISH(IDXTB) X TB, wanted something a bit finer and that will (hopefully) be a bit taller than 14.2hh. Hoping to do a bit more on him eventing wise and maybe even dabble in dressage.
But would always, always recommend a welsh D

Here are the breeds of horses I own.

The Quarter Horses, Paints and Appaloosas are just wonderful horses. They are so easy, sensible and terrific horses to have around. I'd never be without a Quarter Horse, fabulous horses!

The TBs, well I've always been a TB girl and I just like my guys temperaments and they are nice to handle and very affectionate. Plus they look pretty out in the fields :smile3:

The WBs, mine are dopes on ropes. Great big hulking beasties but with kind natures and mine are very easy horses to do. The younger ones are so sensible, quiet and friendly.

The Connemaras; this breed has always been a particular favourite of mine. I've owned Connemaras for around 40 years and I just think they have to be the most sensible, capable, adaptable ponies ever.

We have the Shetlands because my mother wanted to breed them and I have always loved them so got one, or two, or three ... as ridden ponies along with the stud ponies. They are awesomely cheeky wee devils! None of mine have a bad bone in their bodies and most certainly don't live up to the stereotype! One does when ridden but that's just Rains :D

My Fell pony I got as I needed something bigger to ride after the Shelties. There was no point in getting a Welsh, Highland or Connie to show up here in Scotland so we went for the least popular. Jasps is cheeky, hardy yet so unbelievably loyal. Lovely breed all round!

The Dartmoor I got as I had always admired Shilstone Rocks Snowfox and D-Day. I was fed up of the kids at the riding school along the road taking the mick saying that they were better riders because they had bigger ponies than me - they rode Darty's (not very good ones!) and I still rode my epically awesome Shetland who beat them every single time funnily enough! But then being the spoilt brat that I am I had to get myself a bigger and better Dartmoor than them. So I did - I got a full up 12.2hh tank of a S.R. pony by Snowfox :D :D :D He is gentle, genuine, solid, lovable, kind but a wee sod to ride!

The TB's I brought home from work lol! Love them! Such beautiful, charismatic horses with more personality than you can shake a basket full of sticks at!

So I have always had a reason for the breeds even if was to stand out from the crowd they have always been fantastic animals and worth every second I have spent with them.

I am a Haflinger girl. Love the breed. Benji is intelligent, versatile, loyal and as strong as an ox, all packaged up into a 13.1hh powerhouse of a barbie pony!

How can you not love this face!

I got an Icelandic because after I'd spent a week riding them in Iceland I never wanted to go back to a 3 gaited horse.

Not bought because of his breed (Andalusian x welsh b) he was just too beautiful and full of presence to let anyone else have him. I also now know he is mad as a bag of monkeys, hot, hyper, sensitive, has ADHD, but also a tremendous willingness to please, super kind and friendly and is like a giant Labrador. No idea if these are breed traits, he is unlike any horse I have ever come across!

Welsh - I think they're beautiful, and great allrounders. He was a little 'fiesty' for a first horse, but a gem underneath it all and very easy/cheap to keep.

Andalusian - always loved them as they're powerful, quick and so clever. Was recommended a PRE for sale over budget, went to see her anyway and knew then that I would buy her, never mind 'second looks' or second opinions from instructor etc.! Lady is exactly what I expected - strong, sharp, intelligent and incredibly loyal/hard-working, not to mention beautiful :) and easy to keep.

What I wanted: Bay New Forest Mare
What I didn't want: Anything Coloured
What I have: Bay / White Skewbald Irish Draught x TB Mare

Well I guess I am 50% there! Love her to bits and does the job brilliantly!
