I hunter clip mine, but out of interest what exactly is the point in clipping legs (unless of course it is due to type like a cob)? Is it purely for tidiness?
mainly tiredness... also means you can get sand and mud out of the fur better preventing mud rash/fever and other skin problems.. and you can see thorns easier.

the only time I have seen legs clipped is on a horse with serious skin problems, he has to have his legs clipped constatantly so his condition can be treated as instructed by the vet
Vanity in my case - very hairy boy, looks as if he has leg warmers on if I dont clip them , so remove every single hair in the hope that it will make him look like a posh dressage horse. Was hoping new BD rules might include collective mark for neatly clipped legs....
Personally I don't, I believe leaving hair on legs protects them. I think some people feel hair makes mud fever etc worse, and it looks tidier to clip it off.
I've never touched my cobs legs. They live out 24/7 all year round in all conditions including thick mud. They have never had a days mud fever. I never wash them either and I do think thats the key.
I think clipping legs is generally cosmetic but agree it does make things like mudfever easier to treat..
For the same reason I clip the rest of him - to make my life easier! He doesn't like being groomed, I don't have a lot of time, now there is nowhere on him with fur long enough for mud to get stuck in and we are both happier! So much of what I do with him is about making my life easier, this year I thought sod it and clipped out the legs too - well worth doing!
I clip legs to keep them clean. My mare is WB so doesnt get really hairy legs but I still take them all off. If I dont then the hair comes out in clumps when the summer coat comes through.
I leave A's legs cos he lives out & as you can't rug legs I don't want him to get cold. Our field doesn't get muddy so mud fever isn't a prob. He's not really THAT hairy anyway so I just like the clippers ran up the backs so he looks tidy.
i don't and would not clip my mares hairy legs, it keeps her warm and protected, i dont often wash them either and she has never suffered mud fever *touch wood* in 15yrs i had owned her
i would only clip it off if i really had to, but we have coped so far
Clipped Murphy's legs last year as he was so hairy he looked silly with his hunter clip. He looked a lot more like a horse than a pony amazing effect really. So guess I'd only do it for that reason why competing now. Left his legs on at the mo as he doesn't look to bad at the mo.
always clip legs off mine - never had mud fever since I've done it - alot easier to see/clean small nicks and scratches, dry off quicker, looks neater too.
I always put thermatex leg wraps on overnight though and when legs are wet to dry off quickly
