why do coloured horses get stolen more oftern the a plain bay or grey ect

i have a coloured filly and i hate leaving her at night,,
i just cant understand why they want to take the coloured horses more so than the plains.. can you

And I hope that everyone gets their horses freezemarked, whatever colour they are. Microchipping just isn't enough unfortunately these days.
 
coloured horses have always usually been profitable, every time i used to go to a local monthly horse sale coloured horses usually always made the highest prices, they just seem generally fairly valuable for resale for thieves as opposed to a bay version of the same credentials
i used to worry when i had a coloured for 10yrs as she was a very good looking coloured indeed and it was always a worry she may be stolen
 
As a secretary of my local Horsewatch group I would advise that you Freezemark ALL horses regardless of colour, but coloured ones especially so.

PLEASE if you want to keep them GET them marked. its so very important to prevent theft & if the worst does happen help me & others like me to identify your horse.

& while you are at it JOIN a Horsewatch group, the more horse lovers involved the better chance we have to reduce Equine Crime
 
Good for getting your horses freezemarked, but are you a member of Horsewatch?

I am relying on HW and others to help me find Toby.

Much to my regret I chose microchipping over freezmarking - and it seemed the best option at the time. Now I know how wrong I was.
 
I agree. I keep an eye on horsewatch sites and it seems to be mainly Shetlands/falabellas (Mini horses) and coloureds, many of whom are the traditional types, that get taken. Because of where I live, I would not even consider buying a coloured horse.

(However unPC it may be, we know who steal them! And they seem to be above the law.)

If you have any of these I think it is essential that you get them freezemarked.
 
My horse is freezemarked and micriochipped. He also is fairly moody in the stable and doesn't like men, so I hope that would help.....It is a worry though.
 
Dozziesmummy which area of Hampshire are you in? PM if you like.
My daughter has a traddy cob and when our traveller friends are in the area she won't hack out in case they follow and find out where we are. He is freezemarked but I know some owners don't do this because of showing!
 
All of mine are coloured and mircochipped, i want to get all of them freezemarked, i did wonder whether the showing world except freezemarks?
 
Freezemarking should not be counted against you in the show ring.
But better to not win than have no horse, in my view. You simply cannot imagine how it feels to find them gone and not know if they are dead or alive, being neglected or loved.

Please get your horses freezemarked - it is the only visible deterrent at the moment.
 
Within days of getting Mcfly last September one of the first things I did as well as arranging insurance, a good farrier and registering with a vet was to ring Farmkey and to arrange to have him freezemarked. Mcfly is a coloured gyspy vanner cob and has good vanner breeding as well which made me more worried about him being in a word ( if there is one) 'nickable'. We have excellent security at the yard though and owner lives there as well so there should never be any problem however I still wanted the reassurance of a clear indentifiable mark on him. Big lad is microchipped though but he isn't mine ( just on loan) so imo not worth paying to have him marked. Not that I think any less of him but from a financial point of view he is not mine and the owner would be the one benefitting from any insurance I pay for the horse. Both horses are wary of strangers though and that should help.

Exactly the reason why I got Patches freezemarked. I used to get so many comments about what a good horse she is because people see her tackling all manner of scary traffic without a second thought.

It's plainly obvious that Patches is the epitomy of the term bombproof, even though I don't truly believe any horse is bombproof.

When she's clipped out, she looks quite attractive for a vanner type mare too.

Nowadays coloureds are just more fashionable and command higher prices. It used to be that you had a hard time selling a coloured cobby yoke but now its quite easy as this is what is in demand.
 
mine should be getting done in the next 3 weeks the only problem is that my coloured has no colouring on her back or shoulders where should i get it done ?

i had mine done on his neck where his small patch of black is so as to be seen when riding or rugged up otherwise it would be covered. i hate people complimenting him when im riding and moved him to an alarmed private yard run by a horsewatch re (that i may replace soon) as im terrified and used to lose sleep over it. had i known how prevalent it was to have a coloured cob stolen before i bought him i definitely wouldnt have bought him, sad but true, but then i had always wanted a coloured even when they were taken the micky out of.

! my girlie isn't freezemarked but i think i will be getting her done now after all this! although my area isn't known for anything like this but still i'd rather be safe than sorry!
