Why is it that horsey people gravitate towards Jack Russels (or maybe vice versa :D)?

When we go to competitions there's so many JRTs in comparision to other breeds it can't be my imagination. I think they're great little dogs but then I like Sausage dogs too (for example)

I was told by an all-knowing 13 year old lad the other week that they are very good at protecting horses. I had always thought that it was more easy to have a small dog when you live in a teny/horsebox all weekend.

Thinking of buying a big deerhound just to bring the horse/dog world back into balance :D

Your findings/obeservations/theories welcome on this very slow Friday afternoon..............

I had always thought that it was more easy to have a small dog when you live in a teny/horsebox all weekend.

That's it, I think. Plus they're small and cute enough to be carried around at outdoor events like an accessory but without the grooming and masculinity issues of small fluffy handbag dogs.

That, or people genuinely want them to rid their stables of mice and rats. :p

I have a JRT. I find her easy to have around the horses (and she shouts at them if they misbehave!) She's very independent and small enough to chuck in a car or lorry and come to shows with me.

They are very "outdoor" dogs and I've never met a snappity yappity one that spends all of its time getting up to things outside. I'm sure there are exceptions but it's usually those who are kept as pets/accessories indoors that get nasty out of boredom and frustration.

I'd definitely have another JRT!

You beat me to it blackcob. We hardly have any rats because we have 4 JRT. Also they are small and easy to have around and they make lots of noise if anyone goes near the horse box. They are better than any car alarm :D :D :D

Mmmmmm, seems like me and Dr 13-yr old were both right.

Would also like to point out that it should read TENT, not teny - which sounds like short-speak for a tena-lady :D

I have two JRTs, I have always had working dogs and when I had less space it was natural to gravitate towards a switched on, but physically smaller dog.

My JRTs are game as you like, endelessly funny and wonderfully on the go little dogs, I wouldnt ever change them for the world.

Although now I'm getting a GSD too, to bring a big dog back into the equation!!!

My yearling is slightly smaller than the dogs but the rest are the same size or slightly bigger. The foals are tiny compared to them tho which is always funny, my old Dane was always obssessed with them and would spend all day gazing whistfully at them. (very handy for keeping pikeys away)

Only our luck would have the biggest dog at the competition curling out an enormous log at the bottom of the ramp to our lorry the other week  Not a JRT in sight!

Fallenangel123 - if you have a JRT would you then have the urge to start breeding bigger pony's to find horse/dog equlibrium?
