So, I've had Penny for about 2 months now. So far she's had 2 wolf teeth out, antibiotics for bad mudfever and a fungal skin infection. These are all OK now and was looking forward to going up today and actually being able to do something with her. And somehow she's done this:

Its really deep and goes right in sort of behind her eye (which you can't see in the picture) and I nearly burst into tears when I saw her.

We have checked her stable from top to bottom and cannot figure out what happened. And the vet can't come out for another 4 hours to stitch it which means out of hours call out and also she won't let you anywhere near it so she'll need sedating. Feeling very fed up at the moment!

poor thing, the horse needs time to settle in to her new home and by the sounds of it she is lucky she has a lovely owner who cares for her, it will all be worth it in the end that im sure!! good luck

dont worry my horse did that a few days ago in exactly the same place it wasnt as deep as that looks but healing nicely now.
There is gap at the back of his stable where the wall ends and then a piece of wood goes up to the roof he puts his head through the gap to see the other horses and thats how he did his has your stable got a water feeder i have seen a lot of horses do that on a water feeder?.
hope he is feeling better soon x

wow that looks bad I bet its looks worse than it is though. I think that the answer to your question is that you wanted a horse because you wanted to be totally broke and traumatised and always have something to worry about!

Oh! big hugs...I am sure that will heal in no time. One of our old horses got stuck in some bramble and managed to tear off some of his eye lid. He had to be completely sedated to sew it and that healed brill...as if he had never done it.

Well the vet came out last night and was brilliant with her. She's so sensitive she had to be totally doped up to let him anywhere near him and she's had about 10 stitches in it. Oh, it looked sooo much better afterwards though. And I sneakily took the opportunity to finish pulling the top of her mane (couldn't get near it the other day), I'm such a mean mummy.

CassandraRose - yep, I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Though I do love her to bits and she's the cuddliest horse I've ever had... couldn't be without her now

I know how you feel hun, I've had a the same mare for 20 odd years, hardly no problems whatsoever, then the last 2 years has been a nightmare - blown tendon, chipped bone in foot, smashed up on-going damaged hock - but on the brighter side, she's pulling through it (and so am I, although vet bills are crippling me at the mo).

We all have our bad run and this sounds to be yours - just think you have the summer and bright nights just around the corner and you'll have tonnes of fun with her

Hang in there - it WILL get better - promise! LBxx

Glad you and Penny are feeling better. U are not a mean mummy for sneakily doing her mane when she was in la la land - just practical. So much better to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Horses were put on this earth to worry us.... oh and to skin us of all our money!! glad the eye is on the mend, i am having a run of it too with my horses, why does it all come at once???

When you see all the postings you realise your not on your own we all seem to have a run of bad luck.Hope it heals soon.Ive had two years of vets bills and stress but when things start improving you soon forget the bad bits.
