Why Didn't She Buck?

I posted the other day that my horse is slightly lame and is very tense through her back (back lady coming out Wednesday)
Now this might sound silly, but I was wondering why, when her back was causing her pain, did she not try to drop me by bucking, rearing etc? All the stories you hear of horses being found to have bad backs after they've suddenly started bucking when ridden, why did Ethel just stick her head up, hollow through her back and just try to run away from it but come back to me when asked?
If anyone can answer my probable numpty question I would be interested in your theories :)

Bucking seems to be a reaction to certain types of saddle pain, but there are many ways in which a saddle can hurt and for many horses it would really hurt to buck when their back is already hurting. So they don't. Or sometimes they save it up for one single MEGA-buck.

Or of course the horse might have been told off in the past for bucking. Mine don't buck under saddle, but they might do a little "hop" if the saddle no longer fits.

A horse I had on loan came with the narrowest most over stuffed saddle I have ever seen. I cannot imagine any horse would ever fit it, even a 2 year old TB. It was his as it was the one on him when I tried him.

He would take off like a rocket when you first sat on the saddle, but never bucked or reared. He just didn't ever want to stand still, I suspect moving eased the pain. Needless to say he never wore the saddle again when he came here although he still remembered the pain in a well fitting saddle

Ah okay, I can see how maybe bucking could cause more pain, but she's never bucked with me (well once, when i was showing off doing around the world on her to a friend and whilst facing her bum lost my balance so put my hand on her bum to steady myself thinking she'd be okay but she charged off bucking and i flew off backwards .. was very funny :o ) so I haven't ever had to tell her off. I've had her since just before she turned 3 (now 4) but she was in training to be a racehorse before so maybe she was told off for bucking then, she was very quirky in training and her favourite game was to see how fast she could drop her rider :p

spot the risk - shes a thoroughbred with the temprament of a cob on most days, has her quirky days, so not sure which she'd fit into :p

penhwnllys stardust - I like to think that :D She'll hopefully be absolutly fine :)
