Why do drivers do it? (long, sorry!)

I would consider my horse to be pretty traffic proof, we used to be stabled next to a VERY busy road, he's been ridden along side the M4 and on a foot bridge over the M4, so he's pretty good when it comes to traffic.

Anyway, decided to go out for a hack, up to the bridleway for a canter. Leave the yard and head up the hill, lots of blind turns so expect to encounter speeding cars (although they should be slow round blind bends!) but get past the blind turns, road start to flatten, and its straight, there was a 4X4 with flat bed trailer loaded with wood coming towards us, he made no attempt to slow down, infact I'm sure I heard revs, he went past at such a speed with the trailer making a terrible noise. My horse went mental, 180 spin then across the road, lucky just as the trailer had past, but we where very close!

I want to make excuses for the driver, like there was a bend and he couldn't see me, sun in his eyes, me under shade of trees etc. But I had my hi-vis gear on me and horse, no trees, no sun, straight road! So why?

I try to thank EVERY car, that passes if I can take a hand off the reins, or at least nod, I stop if there is a little before blind corners for cars to pass, get on the bank when I can, I think I'm a very pleasant rider on the road. Why do some drivers make make no effort to slow down, its like they think its sport to speed past and scare horses!

I know its the minority of drivers, just like a minority of riders can be ignorant or potentially dangerous, but why do it, it would have taken him 10 seconds longer to drive past me slowly. I wish I'd had a chance to get his reg, but goes to show how quick he went past he was too far away to read it.

I spend a lot of my professional life travelling, so I share the roads in a car as well as on horseback and I would like to know just where do people put their brain while driving?

I mean, they must take it out and put it somewhere, as they can't ALL be that bl**dy stupid can they?

I'm glad you survived, sounds like it was a close one.

i know, its a shame that a few do this, thankfully for all us riders, most are very good and at the very least ease off the accelerator, i just dont understand why they cant just take a few seconds to ease up on the speed, i have met a few such idiots like you describe and they infuriate me, the guy sounds like a tw*t!

I am sorry you had such a close shave, especially as you had taken every precaution to be seen (hi viz gear etc.). Some drivers will always be total prats. Round here, I am very, very lucky - nearly everyone I meet when I am out riding is considerate (drivers, dog walkers, cyclists etc.), but I am lit up like a Christmas tree. However - and this doesn't excuse reckless drivers in any way - there are a lot of horseriders who treat fellow roadusers with complete contempt. They refuse to wear hi viz (in fact I am the only rider in this area who wears it

), ignore motorists who wait for them, ride out at busy times i.e. when people are on their way to work, doing the school run etc., chat on mobile phones, make no effort to let traffic pass etc. etc. Even the most tolerant of motorists can get fed up and TBH who can blame them. Even my neighbour and my husband (both very horsey people) have had a moan about a couple of local riders who are notorious for holding up motorists.

Your right astipussy_inboots, I must have had 50+ cars go past me today, mopeds, tractor and trailer and they were all great, passed slowly, wide, waited for the all clear on the blind bends. But sadly it only takes one!

Our YO's really hot on getting us to leave message if we go out as they came across a rider last year who'd been hit, and the driver had driven off, needless to say it didn't end happily.

Given the number of similar posts, I just thought I'd put in a good word for drivers.

To get to our favourite track we hack along a single track road with blind bends. 9 times out of 10 with our kids and all our mounts are pretty bombproof. This road is used extensively by hill walkers, tourists and locals and the vast majority are polite and either slow down or stop to let us pass. It is so rare to come across someone who doesn't that we talk about it for ages.

It may be that having kids with us makes people think more, or it may be that most non local drivers are on leisure rather than business trips, but generally they are pretty good. And I'd say there has been a marked improvement in recent years.
