Why do horses always have to embarrass you..?!

Lunged my new boy (well, nearly a month now :)) for the first time tonight. He's only 5 and does like to test you out the first time you do something new, plus he's only been lunged in a lunge pen before and we were in a 25x60 school so I wasn't expecting it to be too straightforward!

All went well until I asked for a canter. He went 1/4 of a circle then whipped round and stood looking at me. This happened a few times and I yelled at him and got a bit irritable as he was obviously taking the mickey, generally a really cr*p lunging performance from me!! Suddenly realised that the 4* eventer who runs the yard was in the school checking some jumps, no idea how long he was there. He didn't say anything and wandered off after a bit but I was sooo embarrassed, I've lunged so many horses of all ages with no problems and I'm sure he now thinks I'm a total numpty! Ho hum.

Anyway, once we were alone I got him on a smaller circle and kept him moving, he settled after a couple of tantrums. Of course, no-one saw that part!!

Sorry for the pointless post, just wondered if I'm alone in my numptiness...?!
 
I had a similar experience jumping my old share, the eventer on that yard decided we were capible of jumping higher, put the jumps up (still pretty small - about 3ft) and i promptly fell off and landed on my face. He laughed, but did pick me back up.

At least we provided comedy value. And yours wasn't so bad, he probably just thought the horse was being naughty rather than you were rubbish. I've spent many a time skiing across the school behind various horses on the end of a lunge line, it happens to us all!

Thanks for the comments guys! And somethingorother - I managed even worse once, had a lesson on a new horse (few years back now..) with a 4* eventer and former Olympian and fell off after the first tiny cross pole!!
 
Try riding a horse when he decides he really MUST have a wee...right in the gateway of the local church, now THAT was embarrassing :eek:

Same horse, working beautifully in the school and moving very well at a canter, suddenly decides the group of friends watching me are REALLY interesting and performs stop / handbrake turn, dumping me on the floor right in front of them all.

Lastly, jumping small jumps in our field just for fun. A couple of teenage girls turn up to get their horses from the next field (as they do every weekend), what happens, my boy fly's over a jump, throws in a couple of monster fly bucks, stops dead and spins 180 degrees. Where do I end up, on my backside while H fly bucks and farts all round the field.

Embarrass their owners? It's what horses live for:D
 
At the time when my ginger sausage was a non-loader that was embarrassing - repeatedly! At the Badminton fun ride a few years ago she embarrassed both myself and lots of others too who came along saying " I will get her in" with various gadgets and failing! The ultimate embarrassment though she was made to feel when 3 burly welshmen came over ( at which point we had been trying for nearly 4 hours and our friends had left us) and said "We can't watch you struggling any longer love" - my oh was on the headcollar end, with a one two three they linked arms liffted her bum off the ground and in she ran as if in stilettos!!! We all laughed with a huge sigh of relief but that was embarrassing. Glad I have had proper training now :)
 
Many embarrassing moments with my old boy over the last 17 years however my yearling topped it the other day. Whilst talking to my vet about when most colts are sexually mature (I know they vary slightly) he, knowing full well we were looking at him, decided to get his wang out, get a huge erection and started slapping it against his tum. :eek:
My vet, still trying to be professional at this point, turned round and said 'I reckon he's about ready now' :D
