I had the grim job of cleaning his 'delicate' parts today. He was actually pretty good considering :)

How often do you clean your guys Sheath? And, do you recommend any particular cleaning aids?

Now I'll try to phrase this appropriately :p But, after cleaning there was still 'dirt' parts that I could feel. Only small amounts but should I remove all of it or is there no need to?

Embarassing but it has to be done!

Thank you :D :o

I'm sorry, but I leave well alone , I'll tackle it if there's a problem , but i tend to let nature do it's own cleaning in this department!! Am I a bad mummy?

My vet said best to leave alone unless it was causing nasty discharge and stains down legs, they are meant to be self-cleaning to some degree? Natural lubrication and all that I think? Apparently the 'bits' in there can be very sharp and if dislodged can cause cuts and sores inside which can then become infected - hence best left unless there is a problem in some way? That's my understanding anyway and came as a bit of a relief to me!!

Oh right! I was always under the impression it needed cleaning now and again

To be honest it weren't too bad anyway and it didn't appear to bother him to much having it done. But, if thats the case I'll leave alone from now on (thank god :D) and it can sort itself!

Thank you very very much haha ;)

General consensus amongst gelding owners at our yard is 'leave well enough alone' unless there is a problem. I haven't done anything to H's 'nether regions' since I got him (December), although I do have a sneaky peak if it's 'on show' (but not touch!) and it always looks fine!

Ha ha!! Relief heh! However I think we did all used to think we should clean every now and then so perhaps general concencus has changed of late? Anyway you now have perfect excuse not to worry so hope all stays well with his bits!! :-)

I had one gelding clean as a whistle

BUT my old boy I left alone always until my farrier said it needs a good clean v flaky, so I did! Used emusifying and have used udder cream to wash in warm water, a gloved hand, a peg for my nose!!! Gruesome stuff but he didnt seem to mind!

I would leave well alone unless its right manky!

Thanks folks! I weren't aware that it should be left alone, so will be doing from now on... I'll take any excuse not to clean that :p

... Unless it's causing issues or I'm advised to of course!

well my new boy is exceptionally protective of his bits so this is not a chance in hell of me getting anywhere near them! I squirt around the area with water after a ride and thats that.

However, while everyone is saying stay clear, there was a post not long ago about someone who found maggots in her horses sheath...!

He wouldn't have it done if he was on the side of a mountain where he belongs, so I'm not starting now! 6 months old when I got him, turned 7 years last week, never had a problem!

Yep I've been told by vet to leave it be. Much to my boys relief, he likes his 'privates' so much you'll get a kick if you go near it.
Vet said if it's grossly disgusting/bleeding/discharge then to call her, otherwise don't touch it :)

I wouldn't mind if sheath cleaning was the only downside to having a boy!

I'd clean a sheath every day if Lumi would just walk past a mare without declaring vocally and physically his desire for her. And he actually has no standards!

For the record - I leave alone unless it's yucky!

I stuck my hand in there for his yearly check up, bit dirty, so I gave it a good scratch and pick (don't worry, complete with latex glove :P), He loves it, dirty pervert, he's obsessed with having his bits scratched, and his bum cleaned. Is he abnormal? Am I mean only indulging him once a year? :P :D

EURGH, I think, is the word.

Thanks Pebbles! He is gorgeous and he definitely knows it :)

Yeah it is a disgusting job. I'm glad none of my non horsey friends asked me what I got up to
yesterday... Walked the dog, enjoyed the sun, cleaned my horses delicates... Haha :P

Things we do for our boys hey :D

I usually leave alone but when he was 'chilling out' the other day I noticed a big white thing hanging out the end of it! I gave it a quick squeeze & it popped out- having never done him before I'm presuming this was a bean, although it was a lot bigger than I thought it would be - about the size of a golf ball! So I have his sheath a quick clean & got a lot of bloody coloured muck out In great big lumps, luckily no maggots though!!!

There was a thread on here recently about this and it concluded they DO NEED CLEANING regularly or you get infections including maggots!

Frankly - your vet should be struck off for giving 'advice' like that! For a gelding to get to the "grossly disgusting/bleeding/discharge" stage, he's been in a LOT of discomfort for weeks - or months!

SOME geldings stay reasonably clean with no help - others don't! Even many stallions who get regular opportunities for 'natural cleaning' STILL get disgustingly dirty!

Sorry JG, she didn't actually say it like that lol. It's just the way I put it I guess. And no, my vet shouldn't be struck off for doing that, I work at a riding stables and they even don't touch them unless they have to. I understand some horses have to, but many dont
