Hi everyone. I wonder if I could ask for your help in filling out my dissertation questionnaire from my BSc Equine Breeding and Stud Management course at Writtle College. It is asking why a mare owner would decide to breed from her and can be filled out by anyone considering breeding a foal at some point in their life.

It should only take you about 3 minutes and is 12 questions long, I really appreciate any responses I get. I'm not officially allowed to offer any incentives for you to fill it out (but hot chocolate MIGHT be available...)

Just click on the link below. Thank you for taking the time to answer.

done. Though I filled in 0 mares for breeding as I don't keep any for the sole purpose of breeding. I would like to breed from my competition mare in the future to produce a foal for me - have discussed with the vet etc about suitability for breeding, but the competing and ridden enjoyment is the real reason I have her.:)

Have filled it out for you. Also a student at Writtle College and also on the same course (although I am second year). Would be good to read the dissertation when you have had it finalised/marked etc x

Done, although I don't currently have a mare to breed. It's definitely something I would like to do one day, but of course it will depend on whether I have a cracking mare, the economy etc.

I have filled it in but nothing relates to the racing industry.
Question 10 - we keep what we feel will do well NH racing.
Question 11 - our mares have raced and won - no performance testing from the racing world only records.
Question 12 - no answer for personal experience nor anywhere of stallions progeny performance.

Same for me.

Are you planning to breed a foal in the future, I answered yes, but the real answer is it depends - maybe.

It is not something I would leap into without thought. I have bred three foals in 20 years.

The first two were part of a breeding venture (ISH sport horses), and had two lovely foals, but the time, cost, and lack of an ideal property (at that time), led me to decide that breeding was not for me.

The mares i purchased were purchased specifically to breed from at that time.

We recently bred a foal from one of our pony mares, that I had not intended to breed, the foal is intended to be kept for our own use.

Done but it didn't give a true story of my mare and circumstances. You really needed to be able to tick more than one box - especially on the what would foal be used for - mine would be for most of the reasons given.

I wanted to breed from my mare as she is well bred, has good conformation and has a great work/competition attitude...

Hi everyone. You have all been amazing, i'm astounded by the amounts of responses I have received so a massive thank you!

To all those you have said they have 0 mares for breeding, I also answered the same. That question is there for those who intend to breed in the future but at the moment do have an animal they they would use or don't even have any horses at the moment! I wanted to make the questionnaire as appropraite to a wide audience as possible.

For any of the other problems you had, I really appreciate you letting me know (especially regarding the racing industry as I had written a fair amount about this in the introduction - I didn't specifically include it to make it as generalised as possible). I will be able to discuss any problems you had as respondants and what I should have done differently.

And to my Writtle colleague... the college keeps a copy of all dissertations so you will be able to grab it and have a read at the beginning of next term, if it is of any use to your chosen dissertation topic then you could also use it in your lit review. Pennie is my supervisor so she will be able to get you a copy.

Thank you again for all your help and time!!!! x

The BHS have a lot to say about encouraging owners not to breed, due to the number of excess horses in Britain. Not sure of all the arguments around it, but it's heartbreaking to see the number of Tb's pts every year, simply because they don't make the grade and/or noone wants them.

btw, your question 5 doesnt make sense if you click "no" to any of the questions above it and then you can't finish the on line survey. This will skew your results due to methodological issues.
