Why do my dogs eat pooh?

My two yellow labs have a bad habit of eating pooh , dog , chicken , horse you name it. The vet tells me It's natural but it's so disgusting , I can cope with them eating horse pooh but they even eat my neighbour s dogs pooh if they find it. Both enjoy the free range country life so I would be heart - broken to put them on leads , anyone got an bright ideas??
 
Have you taught them a "leave it" command?

Tink takes notions of eating horse poop but a stern "leave it" (or whatever command you want to use..) stops her in her tracks. No use if they're out of sight though!
 
What vet said, IMO is is natural to a dog, esp a greedy one:rolleyes: it warm, smells good and tastes yummy;)
You could try the old tricks of water pistol in the action, chilli squirted on pooh, pineapple fed in their diet (meant to put them off thier poop when it comes out) or the old shovel it up asap:D
I have only had one dog ever do it, my whip girl and I just chased her off it a few times.
 
yep thats disgusting, one of my whippys eat any poo,you name it she'l have a go at eating it..she loves chicken poo
theres so much crap in dog food these days and it doesnt get digested and comes out the other end MMmmm to some dogs..if dogs are fed barf this doesnt get eaten as much or not at all as this is complete waste
a firm 'no' or 'leave it' helps or as cayla said a squirting water gun,but its usually been eaten before the owners get there
 
It's gross but I think nearly all dogs do it. I use "leave it" too - I don't care what they do when I can't see it as I can't stop it but I hate it when they're slapping horse crap around their chops lol!! Plus last time Millie ate too much, she puked it all over mum and dad's leather sofa :p oops!!
 
Mine does it too - he specialises in horse poo, sheep poo and at the moment, a lot of goose poo. And when he gets onto the muckheap at work - well, I always end up having to go up there after him

Thank goodness he doesn't go for dog poo, but he has sampled human poo once

All labs are waste disposal units on legs anyway, but herbivore droppings are good for them actually,esp. horse.Predigested greenie vegs!:D
 
dogs eat poo coz they're manky! :)
taking the dogs out to muck out the stable is like taking a small child into a sweet shop!

We have a chocolate lab, a black lab and a border terrier and the muck heap is their favourite place on the yard!
 
I was wondering why my dogs poo had bits of grit in it, decided if it continued id have to take him to the vet, then caught him in the cat litter tray eating cat poo, the bits in his poo was cat litter! :eek:

My dogs ate their own poo when younger but Itend to tell them off when they go to sniff/eat it so they are learning.

Someone told me it can mean you are feeding too rich a diet but I dont know if there is any truth in that!?
 
My female Weimaraner eats her own poo or her brother's or my JRT. Its so disgusting. They all eat rabbit poo or horse poo given the chance but she's the only one that will do a poo then turn around and eat it or hoover up the others. I have no idea how to stop her as telling her off or 'leave it' doesnt work. She just tries to eat it up quicker.

Worst thing is she is a very licky dog too and urgh its gross when she tries to lick me after shes been eating poop!

Yep, they probably get a bit more from the food 2nd time round a bit like rabbits do, plus there is so much cereal in dog fud theses days that you will also see New Forest ponies eating dog poo!!!
 
Wow at least now I don't feel that my dogs are weird , my Charlie and Erin ( aka simples 1 and simples 2 ) both tuck into horse pooh and will drop it if I screech at them , but they are never sick so i guess I'm probably worrying unduly , thanks to all who replied...
 
Have no experience of dogs eating dog poo(lucky) but they will eat cow & horse poo. Vet says nothing to worry about unless the horse has been wormed. This has caused fatalities in the past so be aware of this danger.

sounds exactly the same as my female weim, she does it too, at first my dad thought she was trying to hide it when she went in the house as a pup, to avoid a telling off, but then she started to do it in the garden too :(
i think it is something a lot of dogs(for some strange reason that is beyond me) enjoy doing
 
oh my dog is the same!!

not so much other dogs poo but his own, horses and cats. he knows "leave it" command, but if u say it to him he doesnt do what hes trained to do! he runs with it and eats it as fast as he can!
 
Yup - mine do it too!! My JRT is the worst - she has a thing for cat poo especially if it has that extra crunch of the cat litter coating - eeeew!!
I even did a cartoon on the subject!!!:D:D

I have 3 labs. The dog used to do it ALL the time when he was a pup but has grown out of it now (he's 3) having said that if he came across a tasty looking specimen I wouldn't put it past him :D
The elder of the two bitches would eat it all varieties morning noon and night so have to keep an eye on her. If I catch her sidling off on a walk then it's usually poo related and if I catch her in the act I can stop her easily (she is very submissive)! The younger bitch is only 5 months so is happy to chow down too, especially horse poo but she doesn't seem keen on dog poo - for now!
