Why do other horse people always think they know whats right for YOUR horse?

oh its like that in all walks of life. try having kids.... try giving birth with no pain relief to a mahooosive baby and then having a childless midwife try to convince you that you dont need painkillers... everyone has an opinion.

a lady down the road from me tried telling me that i was letting my labrador puppy out too early... wondered why i laughed, my 11 yo (at the time) black terrier must have felt flattered though. happens in petsAtHome too..which is worrying as they are the authority to most new pet owners lol!

in the time i spent on a yard i found that alot of horsey people are quite bitchy, but alot are lovely and kind and wonderful, its just a pity that the bitchyness sticks in your head more than the niceties. yes EVERYONE was the authority on horses at my yard, except the woman who ''had every horsey qualification you can get'', she was very laid back and quiet and helped me alot actually. funny that!
 
We come on here for information/ help or to rant it helps us, we do get help and we do get a slap on the wrists and its needed sometimes, being downright rude is not called for and does not help..however we are all entitled to our say, it is an open forum, take what you need from it and leave the rest. dont be to sensitive.
Putting situations into words can be hard.

i know, everyone has opinions its how they express them, thats seems to be where the problems are :)
i guess its just the horse world, shame then people ruin it for others :p

I always had people commenting on my boys rugging eg "Why does he have a rug its summer!!" um so he doesnt get barbwire cuts!!, "Why does he have 4 rugs?", because he gets cold!! ... "WOOOO how much hard feed do you feed!!??", he is a lazy git and drops weight easily. Also had an eventer tell me a physio was a waste of money, personally i disagree. There are many times i would like to comment on how people keep there horses but i dont unless they ask. A livery at the yard hasnt got her horses feet looked at since summer, they are in a dreadful state but refuses to get them done until she comes sound!!! i personally avoid her lol another girl whos pony has lameness problems turned her horse out in the outdoor which is basically rutted froozen ground, not all weather sand, it would be safer to turn your horse out on concrete for a run!! Well pony came in lame and she wonders why :rolleyes:

i get that and you answer then they start on something else... like feed or say 'well your stupid' :o
I wouldt comment on anyones horses, unless they asked too, if i did id have soo much to say! but i dont whats the point? its there horses and nothing i say is going to change there opinions or change what they do with it < i think theses people that say stuff like what you have said should relise this :rolleyes:
 
I believe advice shouldnt be given unless asked for.
Unless its my close mates I dont interfere with other peoples horses.

Even with close mates I keep quiet unless asked, and even then I know they only want to hear what they want to hear and will ignore anything they don't like!!

Sometimes un-warrented advise is actually useful, one of mine was scouring for weeks and we couldn't find the cause, another livery came over and said 'tell me to bog off if I'm interferring but have you tried Brewers Yeast?' I hadn't...so I did...and now I have a very healthy boy with normal poohs!!!! So if she hadn't butted in I might never have tried it.
 
there is a good way to give advice, and a bad way. advice is better taken when worded differently eg, ''why dont you try this-do it that way'' instead of ''your doing it wrong, this is the right way''
and like ^^ said, some people ask advice but only hear what they want to hear and think everyone else is wrong.
 
I think this can depend on the situation as well. If its something dangerous, then I might go up to one of the liveries (a couple of them are young, novice owners) and say have you thought about this etc but there is no need to be rude as you say some have been to you.

It's like the other day, YO son asked "do my ponies not get cold?" because they've got wimpy horses and they've all been rugged for weeks. Nope, my two are having fun playing in the snow.
 
I think the horse world is simply a very opinionated one. Everyone thinks their way is best. That's just how it is. Being on a livery yard like I believe you are, I guess its probably worse. I keep my horses at home so I never come across any bitchiness about how I keep them. However, if you say stuff on a forum then people will give their advice so in that respect I think its acceptable. Like in this case - you mentioned 4 rugs which some people have picked up on. I also find it odd that you pile on 4 rugs, especially 2 of which which are summer sheets so pretty useless on the cosy-stakes. BUT that is just my personal opinion. I have only ever used a maximum of 2 rugs (a MW or HW stable rug with an under-rug or a MW stable rug under his turnout) on my thin skinned TB x (who is often clipped). Perhaps you don't have a HW stable rug in which case you have to layer?

Yes, fair enough if its dangerous or something is seriously wrong i agree you should say something , but 4 rugs until the hw we have order comes though isint going to kill her really :o

Yes she had a full clipped cause shes in worked quite hard cause otherwise she gets fizzy and she gets quite sweaty so i dont want her to be really sweaty specialy when its freezing cold. :)
 
People who know a little are usually the worst, they have an opinion on everything. Try keeping a horse with people who compete for a living, they won't tell you you're doing anything wrong if your horse is well and happy. Someone who has had horses for a few years and never achieved anything, however... well they always have something to prove :rolleyes:

If your horse is NOT well and happy, however, I don't think it's wrong for people to intervene. For example, an arthritic horse being jumped constantly and not fed enough is where most people with an ounce of common sense would get involved.

PLEASE dont change the subjected on jumping my horse and feeding it? its healthy and well looked after thanks [after taking vets advise!!]

all im saying is sometimes some horsey people need to relise when and where they can share there opinions :)
 
My daughters pony has 4 rugs on, a sheet, a duvet, a lw stable rug and a hw stable rug sounds alot but he wasnt warm enought with out the duvet so i had to add another one. I put it down to the fact that its the first year hes had afull clip (has his legs and half a head) as with previous owner hasnt kept him the heavy workload in the winter.

The thing is all horses are different one horse can live out naked in the winter another needs 4 rugs on, so while they may think there right for there horse its not for somebodies elses. :)
 
whats excatly what ebs has on last night, now shes in just 3 cause its warmer tonight

yeah true, i guess they know whats right for there horses so think it mustbe right for everyone elses :p
 
It's not that people always think they know what's right for your horse, it's just that if you ask a question on here, people are going to give an answer based on their own experience. For example, if you ask a question regarding feeding, the replies are going to come from people who have used a particular feed and liked or didn't like it. If you ask a question about jumping or gridwork, people are going to give you advice based on what they have found worked for their horses, and good advice is usually given after people have tried and failed at something and then tried and succeeded at something, so they give advice on what they have succeeded at. You don't have to take the advice, you can read it and disregard it if you want, or you can read it and think "yes, I'll try that" - that's your decision at the end of the day.

Yes!! After him getting backed (by another horse) into the barbwire fence he ended up with barbwire cuts the whole way along his hind quarters, shoulder and side. So id much prefer the rug to get it than my horse and he wasnt hot and sweaty in it sooooo ...
 
Just ignore it. People stop giving you their advice/opinion then. If they do just smile and say okay thanks. It's always going to happen, sometimes they might be right though.

The point I was trying to make was that it is possible to express a different opinion without being nasty or upsetting people. Not really to say that there's only one correct way to rug.
 
Don't worry. According to some people on here I'm nasty and cruel because all mine are out 24/7 in all this cold weather. I do not have
them in, change their rugs twice a day and give them all a very good groom daily.

They are rugged up well, have a field shelter and access to the stables which all have good beds down. They are checked twice a day and I can see them from the house any other time.

They are fed well with ad lib hay

None of them ever have a chill or cough. They are happy and healthy.

Look after your horse the way you want to.

As for rugs a cheap way to add warmth is a duvet from somewhere like ASDA or Tescos. warmth without weight.
