to butt into how other people look after their horses?

If a horse was in danger or being mistreated then yes, I'd report them or try and reason with them.

Why does anyone care how someone else looks after their horse though? I know it's frustrating how people train their horses etc but why on earth do people butt in so much.

It's something that's mystified me ever since getting back into riding and could someone please just answer why!! ??

And why is it that people who so freely 'offer' their opinion, are completely crappy horseman themselves? And why am I never quick enough with a comeback?

and.....why do people think they know your horse better than you do? All of them have little oddities and as an owner, and one with good animal husbandry you learn what scares them, how to calm them etc....arrggghhhh
 
Think many horsey people are just very bossy and self-righteous! The main joy of having my own little place for my horses is not getting reams of "advice".
 

Ooooh I so know how you feel!

My pony is a New Forest (supposed to be, I have my doubts) but she does need rugging in the winter.
A person in the past has told me to just turf her out & she will be fine as she is a native.

I did this with her the first few months of having her so October/November & early December. She lost weight despite having ad lib hay & hard feed, she was on good turnout & had a regular worming programme, she also was not in hard work & not clipped. She is not a good doer so therefore I rug her & she now maintains a healthy weight through the winter with ad lib hay & a small evening feed. I like to keep them slightly lean through the winter so when the spring grass comes through they have a little bit of of space to put weight on without getting fat.

This person went on to tell me that I was mollycoddling her & she should be turned out with no rug & as she was native didn't need hard feed either! Errr, hello! I've seen the effects of no rug & no hard feed & it aint pretty!

Gah! Annoys me so much!
 
Oh tell me about it! I wouldnt dream of interfering like some people do..I would feel rude doing it. Its none of my business what other people do with their horse..unless it was not being cared for correctly. I think some people are very much stuck in their ways and believe everyone should do the same to their horses as them

I was having a conversation about this with my friend today.
I'm not sure if the horse world is alone in this, but people do seem to be judgemental about how we look after our horses, what we do with them and what sort of horses we hav e.
People at our yard tend to do things differently from how I do them, but as their ponies get decent basic care, I wouldn't dream of interfering unless asked.
 

Yes, I would only interfere if the horses welfare is at risk.

I was on a horrendous livery yard at one point & got told by somebody there that I "needed to have more confidence when riding as I plainly lack it. Especially over jumps"

True, but I was having lessons at the time & had not long been out of hospital after a double hip replacement.

Baring in mind this is coming from the same woman who had a Welsh Cob gelding & to turn him out she would tell all others on the yard to get in their stables & take their horses with them as she was turning J out. The reason? She would open his stable door & let him loose, running in front with a bucket of pony nuts as she could not control him on the leadrope.

This horse was stabled all day & all night apart from afternoon turnout with their other young pony they were bringing on (another story in itself). and I never once saw him being ridden. Baring in mind I'd be up there every morning & evening & all day at weekends. He was also fed haylage & some hard feed. No wonder he had had laminitis......

And she tells me what to do with my horse?!

This was about 3/4 years ago so no idea where she is now. Felt sorry for the horse though as although strong he was a nice boy & deserved better.
 
mmmm seems I'm not the only one.....somebody I hardly know told me that I didn't have enough experience to own TB types and that they were all nuts. That statement in itself showed how little she knows about TB's. That and the fact she rides a pony.

Nothing against pony owners (honest, I want one myself!) but sheesh....she's never even ridden a bl@@dy TB so how the hell would she know....?
