Take what is useful to you and you can learn from and ignore the rest is what I think. No point in getting fired up about what someone you will never meet and knows you from a few lines of typing thinks.

?????

Yup. But some people who seem to always ignore advice, but always ask for help and then go on to say they were right all along, when they clearly wern't and its a real life animals welfare at stake do need an online slap.

Quite agree with you. I wouldn't like to meet some of the people who post on here.Everyone is entitled to their opinion but some go on and on and really get their knickers in a twist about what people should do or not do especially when animal welfare is an issue.

Actually, I've just read the Jordanross post again, and would like to say, for the record that I was actually the first person to recommend calling the vet out!!!!

I think people get offended because they forget that, no matter how much advice you give, it is up to the individual whether they follow it or not.

I wasn't necessarily talking about that thread, just in general really.

For the record I think it is a very useful forum

For the record so do I, but I do think that offence is taken very quickly in some instances, and sometimes, people don't get their facts straight!!!

People are touchy. When we get offended in 'person', so to speak we either answer back or walk away. It is so easy to sit at a keypad and write what ever pops in our heads. How many of us are guilty of writing something in an email or post then sent it and then really thought about it. Perhaps we could of been less forceful with our opinion or perhaps been less condescending and even patronising.

I hope that I'm not guilty of either of these things!!!

I actually take time to post, and think you are right. Write it in haste repent at leisure!!!

i think its typical horse people behaviour...
like to be right about everything
dont like to be told they are wrong as they no everything, not overly interested if they are wrong and get a bit sharp because they dont want to appear as if they dont no what there saying....
a little bit of knowledge is a very dangerous thing..

Sorry, if I'm not making myself clear here, but by saying "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" you are ostracising most of the forum users!

Therefore, by that statement alone, don't you offend others too!!

It is just typical human behaviour I think, horse people aren't any more special in this aspect than any one else.

No-one, whatever their walk of life likes to look a fool or to feel patronised, it is terribly easy to take offence at words on a screen even when offence is not intended.

I don't get offended when well meaning people see photos I put up and tell me I should pull up my ragwort because it is poisonous.
I know that, but how do they know I know?
I also don't have ragwort but do have lots of goldenrod, but how do those people know that?
It looks the same from a distance in a photo. They could be being patronising, or they could be genuinely concerned, I take it at face value and will comment on it accordingly.
If, on the other hand, someone said "I'd be pulling that ragwort up/ changing that saddle/halter/fencing" then I'd get pissed, not because of the content of the comment, but the tone of it.

I think constructive criticism is healthy and should be taken in the vein it is offered regardless of whether you intend to take any notice of it or not.

Probably!

I was more on about other people being offended by what other people write than people writing things to be offensive if that makes sense. people will say/do as they will but it is up to the reader to ignore what is said or take heed rather than letting it upset them.

If I read, for example, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. It wouldn't offend me in the slightest.

I don't know you, you don't know me and therefor whatever you say about my current situation is based on a few lines of info I have provided so any judgement you pass on that information I can either take into account or let it pass me by.

I think some people take things said on here to heart and get upset by things instead of doing that and its sad because it drives people away.

I'm not passing judgement on anyone its just a shame.

I have however the skin of a rhino

i think people just need to realise that the advantage of the forum is they can take on board the info that they think could be helpful/useful and just leave the rest , and not to take everything to heart , if i think someone has written something i dont agree with i just ignore it simple as

Couldn't agree more!

As I said in the first post, people are offended because, if someone asks for advice, and it's given, it is up to the individual whether they take that advice, or choose to ignore it!!

It's a forum!! It's a very good forum, and there are some lovely people on here, who are supportive and give very good advice. However, I do think, offence is taken rather too quickly, on some issues (maybe for forum clout!!!

).

Also, I think, in some of the situations where advice is asked for, those people are in a heightened state, and therefore their feelings should be taken into consideration. They are often tearful, worried, desperate, and need help, not nastiness.

The problem is that people can be easily be offended because all they read are the words, they can't tell how you say it so they decide how to take it....if they take it the like you have said it in bad way, then really that is their problem, depends on what mood their in I guess.

I'm sure most people on here mean things in a help and nice way even if it is something an OP doesnt really wish to hear, but that is the risk you take when asking for advice etc.

Sometimes people can come across as a bit blunt, which in some cases I suppose can be taken in the wrong way, when in fact the person replying might just like to keep post short and straight to the point rather than meaning to offend.

Where as others babble on too much *cough* like moi

I'm guilty of getting my knickers in a twist over comments made. It's not so much that the comments may or may not be true, or too close to home. I'm a big girl and if I'm honest, I have a good idea of what the replies will be but need some back up one way or the other - and am happy to get altering point of views. I do enjoy learning and getting some constructive opinions.

HOwever... I do find that there are occasions that folk post things that they wouldn't say in person. That's the part I have issue with. Someone once made a rude comment to me which sticks in my head in particular that kind of riled me, but I refuse to acknowledge it because it only feeds it further, and I don't wish to continue in that vein. It'll probably happen again so either I can grow thicker skin and just ignore the rudeness or stop playing.

I guess if I had a wish, I'd just prefer it if people would speak to eachother on forums the way they would as if they are face to face. Cos lets face it, some of the posts on here would never be said without the anonimity of internet forums.

Oops, put me in the babbling category.
