George just gets 3/4 scoop of hi-fi lite and his lo-cal balancer and I am often asked if that is all I give him!! Look at him, he certainly doesn't need any more!
LOL just what I was saying yesterday!! Must have more money than sense! I picked up a freebie mag today and it was stuffed with clever marketing ploys from feed companies!! I think people get a bit of a guilt complex that they haven't got time to ride, or the horse is stuck in so they make it a nice big feed!! I also think that people over estimate the amount of work that their horse is doing, I have had people tell me their horse is in hard work when all it is doing is 3 x 1 hour hacks a week and 20 mins in the school!!
Some people may think Pickle's feed looks too big. (obviously not at the moment as he is off work and on box rest!) but he does need the size feed he is having, he needs something to give him a bit of a boost of he is soo unbelievable slow, also he is suprisingly hard to keep condition on due to his Anemia which can mean he suddenly looses his appetite. His food would be HUGE to many people, however its all for good reasons and vets say he looks good at the moment
I think many people don't understand the rules of feeding and 'diy' it a bit
As for mine, he is a porker living out 24/7 but i need something to carry supplements and a balancer in as he gets fed so little. He gets half a scoop of speedi-beet (no molasses) and a handful of good doer chaff once a day and will continue with this throughout the winter!
theres people on my yard who just buy the cheapest feed or feed whatever the "best" person on the yard is feeding even though they dont do alot and then wonder why the pony is overweight. Or just do it so they have a "breakfast" and "dinner".......gets on my nerves. One lady didnt even know their pony was overwieght despite him having a huge crest and people telling her all the time. Im not surpirised she fed him everything she ate as well as the biggest feed of M-chaff and SB ive ever seen even in summer.
yeah too tue like the winergy range, reduced starches and looking at it, it has lots of alfafa, so its a no brainer, feed less starches stick to chaffs etc and add a supplement, save you the £15 for a 15kg bag
A naked horse in October! Dear God, someone call the RSPCA!

You'd better phone them twice about me then!
Star (rugless) was too warm today and she has only worn a shower sheet a couple of times in the last month, no fill yet... Be hasn't even seen a rug yet, and I bathed her yesterday afternoon as it was so sunny and she'd gotten sweaty with her traveling and treatment at the vets on Tues.
I am amazed at how greater rugs some people are using already. I have spent the last few days at the yard with the horses tootling around in just a t-shirt, and have been sweating just mucking out.
My two do have large heavy feeds - but they are chaff with a bit of speedibeet and supplements so although they look huge, in terms of cals, they are not. They are fed SS products so no cerals or sugars.
They are not rugged - they have to wear SI bodies all summer so from mid - end September to end October they get their naked time.
I am putting out a bale of hay a day in the field for the two - but the field is very bare.
This weekend they go onto winter field so no hay for a while and they will be clipped and start wearing no fill t/o - it is still 15 - 17 during the day here and a fleece or at the most 100 g rug at night as the coming in at night routine starts.

Tbh I actually think this post is a bit unfair.
My horse is in light work, only hacking due to injury... she is fed 1/2 a scoop of baileys no.4, 1/2 a scoop speedibeet, and a couple of handfuls of conditioning chaffs.... they make a relatively large feed. She has a very small clip and is *shock horror* in a mw rug. She's forward going (THANK GOD, cannot stand lazy horses) because that's who she is
I would LOVE to be able to give little feeds, it would be so much cheaper, but I know my horse and know what she needs to keep weight on. If the horse is over weight, I totally agree, but if the horse is healthy, why do you care?!
Totally agree with this post...... but why is it always one extreme to the other? most of the horses I know are totally over fed as OP says or underfed/ not recieving anywhere near the amount of vits and mins needed?
