Why do people pay £100's for Xbreeds?

What I find scary is the trend for crossing so called "macho" breeds. Just before Christmas there was a litter of Rottweiller x Dogue de Bordeaux advertised in our local paper, I hate to think where some of these might end up!

I went to a rescue place to get a puppy, they insisted I fence my garden to 6ft - I have 35 acres!!!!!! I have another lurcher and he doesn't need 6 ft fencing. They wanted to charge me £150 for a puppy of indiscriminate breeding, the bitch had had major trauma from humans and was very wary. I could not handle her or see her in a home environment. We are all told to asses the dog and bitch before taking on a puppy to ensure that you are happy with them - in rescue I couldn't, so I bought what I wanted from a reputable breeder of lurchersfor £200, I saw the bitch and dog in their home environment. I was able to find out exactly what had happened to her since she was born and the result is a well adjusted gorgeous 4 month old lurcher puppy.

i have a rottie x GSD she is a beautiful gentle dog who everyone wants to take home, i paid £40 for her at five weeks old but she was the runt and the people who bred her were moving house and didnt want to have to move a litter of small pups with them. the same people have a litter for sale at the minute and are charging £150 pounds for them

I own one of these (Rottie x Dogue). He is the softest, most loving dog ever. SO good with people, so lovely natured, and we have just very successfully introduced a tiny JRT puppy to the family- she hangs off his facial wrinkles without him battering an eyelid.

He sounds a sweetie, and I wasn't trying to imply this cross would always be a problem but just that the very image of the two breeds might cause the wrong sort of people to want to own them. I used to breed GSDs and currently own 3 and I know only too well that some people want big dogs for all the wrong reasons, the main reason I decided not to have any more pups was because I was fed up of people turning up wanting guard dogs!

Having only had crossbreeds, I would definitely pay money for one if it was the right dog.

The ones we've had have been without exception, healthy, sane, well adjusted and very long lived - our poodle x wolfhound x lab x whatever else we thought she looked like (rescue with no known parentage!).......lived to the grand old age of 21, only attending the vets for vaccinations, and after a cat decided to remove half her ear.

Incidentally, I'm allergic to dogs and very asthmatic, and the labradoodle being non-allergenic is a bit of a myth. Not all dog allergy is the coat, it can also be the dander and the saliva, so although there is a chance the labradoodle is lower risk, for a true allergy sufferer there is likely to be some reaction.

Well i rescued both my JRT from Irish gypsy's.My 1st one i paid £165 for 3 yrs a go as the man was going to drown her and the kids had already abused her.The best £165 i've spent she is 1 in a mill. The other is 9wks old now and she was 1 of 6 pups that was dumped on me a wk before xmas by an irish gypsy he had already drowned 3 of the litter and he said if i didn't take the rest then they too would go the same way,NICE,NOT! I have now sold the other pups to knowledgeable homes after hand rearing them from 3wks.Kept one bitch for myself, not sure if she is JRT x now as her legs are v.long, think maybe Border terrier in there somewhere.

A lot of terrier breeds are crossed for working purposes like ratting.I know of some lovely x breeds and i don't see whats wrong with paying for a dog as long as you are going to give it a loving, caring home then thats all that matters.

"Labroodle is bred for a reason as they don't shed hairs and is ideal for astmatics"

The Guide Dog for the Blind association has stopped using them

No they have not! they now have their own poodle stud at Leamington too - My OH works for them at the breeding centre.

Does not detract from the fact, that I would not have a xbred either - horses for courses.

I paid £150 for my Boxer x Golden Retriever, and would pay twice as much again for another one. She is a gorgeous dog, both to look at (IMHO!), and temperament-wise. The x-breeds and mongrels versus pedigrees debate will continue for ever...

Aww Boxer crosses are just lovely.

If I had a pound for every person who has wanted to take my Boxer x Collie off my hands, I would be a lot better off!

She is perfect for us. A pure Boxer would be just too stupid a dog for us. With the Boxer x Collie we have the gorgeous Boxer temperament with the Collie brains and plenty of energy. Perfect for our lifestyle. We would not breed from her. (She has had her gearbox removed).

I find our local paper is jammed full with litters of Labradors, Jack Russells and Spaniels for sale. They are in there week after week. This is what annoys me. If there is not a demand for them, don't breed them!

I don't want my Dogs to be a fashion statements. We just want good temperament, intelligence and good health. My dogs are MY pets. Nothing more, nothing less.
