Why do people "shout" their horses from 100 yards before the gate?

I would love my horses to gallop to the gate when I shout them. Come to that I would love my horses to amble to the gate when shouted.

Instead I get ignored on a daily basis!

This happened at a yard i was at and has become a real bug bear of mine. At the time I was halfway through the field having already caught my horse - not a nice place to be when 10-15 horses come galloping towards you!!! My horse obviously didn't stay happily by my side and ended up full pelt round the field with a rope between its legs!!! I never call my horses now unless I am 100% sure they are the only ones out and no one is walking in the field!!!

I can shout and holler all I want and still (if i'm lucky) only get an amble over to the gate!

I tend to shout from a long way away simply due to the length of time it takes for her to make it over to the gate- I try to time it so we meet at the gate at the same time :P

Although at the moment she is in a field on her own (surrounded by other horse's fields!

) even when there are two or three together unless it is cold/ wet/ they're hungry I am unlikely to ever be able to whip them up into such a frenzy that they would gallop over!!
