Why do people think it's acceptable...

So I have just come back from walking my dog, and I do not understand why people think that it's acceptable for their dog to run up to mine and make absolutely no attempt at stopping their dog?
She is a white mini poodle, so yes she does look very cute, fluffy and completely non-threatening but that does not mean that she IS dog friendly!
When she was little, she was attacked by a GSD, and had her leg broken by the GSD's jaws biting down on it. So yes she doesn't like dogs of any kind, she gets very scared, and as a result snaps at them.
So when i'm walking along on my walk with her, nice and calm, and another dog walker comes along, I now have to resort to picking her up because they make no attempt at getting their dogs on the leads or at least to heal.
Today I had a lady walk past me with her dog saying ''oh don't worry he's friendly'' and just as she was saying that her dog jumped up at me to sniff my dog. My dog was not impressed and snapped back at the dog. The ladies face wasn't impressed but I really can't do any more to prevent this sort of situation! I physically remove my dog from coming into any sort of contact with their dog not because im afraid of their dog but because my dog doesn't like theirs!
SO why do people think its acceptable to let their dog freely run up to mine, or even jump up me just because she is small, fluffy and cute? If I were walking a staffy or GSD they wouldn't let their dog do that?!

Believe me,they let their dogs do this even if you are walking a GSD, but no doubt they would be the first to complain if their dog got bitten.:mad:
I do sympathise, some people have no idea and their dogs have no manners, but have no ideas how we can get the message across to them.
 
People rarely allow their dogs to run up to mine:rolleyes: but if I had a little dog like yours I would call out to the owner and say yours has mange and watch them scrabble trying to catch their dog.

You could get one of those yellow ribbons as in Dinos dogs but a lot of people wont know what they and more likely not care.
 
Pick her up, let people on you regular routes know. I've had a few stand ups with the 'my dog is friendly and just wants to play' idiots. Yeah, mine is not and doesn't. He'd like to kill your dog and I'd rather that didn't happen, which is why I have him on a lead and I'm dragging him away as quickly as I possibly can. Infuriates me. :(
 
I've never heard of the yellow dog project! That is really cool! Unfortunately 90% of the population in my town are people who have no clue about ... anything. Most commonly used sentence is ''wha u lookin at!'' so I don't think any of them would know what the yellow stuff means. :rolleyes:

I do pick her up now, but I was not impressed when that dog jumped up on me today to get to her, no apology from owner nothing, and it was quite a large dog too! Very inconsiderate and absolutely no manners :mad:

Hmmm, I may try the bandana. But I still think that the simple 3 words may be a bit of a challenge for some around here :p :rolleyes:

I feel your pain OP - I have lost count of the number of times some idiot has let their little terrier run up to my 4 greyhounds while I am out walking them on leads :mad: Other dog walkers appear not to notice that one greyhound is muzzled - yes fellow dog walkers, that IS for a reason, he is NOT safe with small dogs of any kind....

I am now very uncool and just shout/say loudly 'could you please get your dog away from mine' :cool: I really don't mind what they think of me, I have found that it is easier to say that than to deter 100kg plus of massed greyhounds from flattening the small dog :D
 
Its incredibly annoying!
I also find that people randomly walk over to my dog and without asking, start stroking her and making a fuss of her. Again, just because she is small and cute and fluffy does not mean that she is friendly!
She wouldn't hurt a human, but she does not tolerate little children because everytime she had any contact with them, they'd pull her ears and poke her eyes, so she doesn't like them anymore.
I do feel their pain though cuz she's just like a little princess dog but they could at least ask!
Here's the dog i'm talking about, and yes I know, not very intimidating or scary, doesn't strike you as dog unfriendly or child unfriendly :rolleyes:
 
There really are some very thick people around aren't there, I used to have the same problem when trying to take my lurcher out on her lead for a gentle walk as part of her healing process after she snapped her femur in half.
Time and time again she would get jumped on by uncontrollable dogs appearing out of nowhere, I'd ask the owners to call their dog back but they'd either ignore it or the dog had no recall anyway.
I couldn't let her off the lead to run out the way because of her leg.

I now have cracked it though, she's better but doesn't like large in your face dogs that come at you at the speed of sound with numptie owner ignoring their behaviour.
I try the reasonable request of asking them to recall their dog, if that fails to register then I stand still and bellow in a VERY LOUD DEEP VOICE "CALL YOUR DOG BACK, followed be the statement "UNWANTED ATTENTION" and then when it ignores the owner I bellow "IF YOU HAVE NO RECALL KEEP IT ON A LEAD AND DON'T LET IT OFF UNTIL YOU HAVE CONTROL"
I DON'T ASK THEM, I TELL THEM, it works.When I have bellowed they avoid eye contact with you and usually are very embarrassed at having no control over their asbo dog what so ever and it's very often in front of loads of other dog walkers. It's the only way to get it through their thick skulls.
They usually avoid me after that if I ever see them again that is,which suits me down to the ground, it seems to work, try it!
 
People who don't own a DA dog or who have only ever had a 'nice' dog just don't get it. They tend to bend down in the dog's face and put their hand down in passing on the dog's head. They let their bouncy, untrained dog bomb over and it won't recall and when my sweet looking little on lead, being madly restrained spaniel goes psycho, they get all huffy, like it's my fault!

Drives me nuts, especially the auld Irish fella who always wants to talk and ask why Zak is going nuts and surely he just wants to play? :rolleyes: Drives me MAD! I had severe words with the bloke and today, he finally avoided me!!
 
Lol DG snap....its the opposite wi me, asoon as my akita or rottie are in view people scramble for their dog, i would not care neither of them bat an eye, suits me though!

Dex generally has folk scurrying to get hold of their dog too- not that I walk in places where we are likely to see lots of off lead dogs..... i dont know why- butter wouldnt melt!! He can make some god awful noise tho!

 
Had another situation today, with a big young bouncy lab x. I saw them coming from a long way so I picked up my dog and started shouting ''please could you take your dog away from mine'', ''please call your dog back'', ''please put your dog on the lead''. In response I got her shouting ''don't worry, he just wants to play'', ''you can put your dog down, he's friendly'', ''its ok, he's friendly''. Dog got to me, jumped right up and squished his nose right into my dogs face. Unfortunately I think my dog has had enough of this too, and she bit him on the nose :( He squealed and ran back to his owner. So woman starts talking to her poor doggy in a baby voice, and when I got level with her, she says ''your dog has just bitten my dog, this is unacceptable, bla bla bla'' I calmly told her that I did repeatedly ask her to take her dog away, and that just because my dog is a small poodle does not mean that she likes dogs, that is why I kept asking her to keep her dog away. She went red in the face, put her dog on the lead (too late for that now!) and stormed off.
I really do not know what else I could have done :( My dog does not attack other dogs if they walk past her, even if they are close. If they show no interest or don't touch her, she is fine. She loves people and would not hurt them so I don't see why I should stop walking her, she's not dangerous and she needs exercise!
I just felt so sorry for the dog, just because its owner is stupid he got bitten.
Just need to add, it wasn't a hard bite, it didn't even leave a mark, it was more of a warning grab.
But I feel as if I should have done something more :(

ETA. love all the dogs posted on here, they're gorgeous! :)

Oh they do. Last sat at 7 in the morning, out with all 3 staffords, found myself joined by 2 large black off lead labs. Wretched man had seen me ahead and just let his dogs off with no warning to me. He could have shouted out or just held back till I was through the first field...
 
my dog also doesn't like dogs coming up to him, so when we see a dog he doesn't know we put him on the lead. cue clueless owner letting their brand new kc registered pedigree 'not a spot of mud in sight' type lab come bounding up to us, my dog going mental on the lead and me trying to make him sit and get his attention with a biscuit which never works :rolleyes: I shout to owner to call their dog and I get the same old "he is friendly!!!" well ******* off because my dog isn't!
Then I'm the one who gets the "that dog is dangerous" look! could rant all day about this!
 
We get our clients to practice their best, bossy 'STOP! I only want you to stroke my dog like this' and 'NO! my dog is in training' and teach them how to get people to stroke their dogs correctly. I normally role play the 'crazy coochy cooing numpty approaching at speed'. It comes naturally :D
