Why do people want to own thoroughbreds?

I will never understand it.

They are skinny, skitty, stupid long clumsy legs, need rugging when the sun goes in, have to be kept in a stable as the natural 24/7 outdoors is too harsh for them, need a horse shop full of supplements and extra food to keep weight on them over winter, they look very scrawny and rat like

Their paces are so clumsy, put them on a hilly field and watch those legs stuggle to cope, stuck up riders go past with their noses in the air "oh look at my supurbular TB scoff scoff", did I mention expensive to keep?

Your thoughts?

C ;)

Mine is out unrugged all day and only eats haylage at night. Never been fed hard feed yet. The first two years of her life she lived out 24/7!

And she is drop dead gorgeous of course. :)

Not all tbs are as you state!
My first horse was a tb (x racer) and I couldn't have asked for a safer horse, we gave him to a friend in his retirement and he is still going strong now at 24
If any thing the cob I owned after was more trouble!
I have to say tbs are not every ones cup of tea but either are shires or shetlands
Every one is different
I am not over fussed on Arabs but I don't go round insulting them, there just not for me as I am sure the type of horses are not for some other people

I agree - I don't know why anyone would want to own a horse like that!

Luckily, my thoroughbred lives out 24/7 all year round (with hay overnight when there is frost or snow), wore a 200g rug in the minus temps we had last year, is fed chaff in the summer and chaff with sugarbeet in the winter plus added vits+minerals, has never had the vet for anything other than jabs, works happily unshod, has a nice temperament, is a 'chunky' type with lovely paces, and charges up and down our sloping fields with minimum effort! :p

I will admit he costs more than the two ponies but that's mainly the size difference tbh.

Aren't these threads getting a bit tedious now?

I know they are posted in a lighthearted way, but there seems to be a new one every week.

Yes- cobs are slow and lazy, tbs are mental and lame and warmbloods are thick skulled european cows.

I will go back to being grumpy in the corner now ;)

Because they're intelligent, sharp as a knife, keep you on your toes and you learn something from them every day! From a NH perspective they teach you to be subtle and quiet (although sheep are the best teachers, make a wrong move and the whole bloody lot run off - then you can't get near them for 3 hours!).
I've had other breeds and x breeds but I love TB's its something you just can't help, and for me nothing beats a TB foal with its HUGE legs!!

I quite agree, your mare is gorgeous :)

Also, I think this thread has been done before.

I own a chunky cob, love him to bits, however, I can appreciate the beauty of TB's, my sister has an ex racer, 12 yr old gelding. He is stunning, sensitive and has manners to die for! :)

I cannot believe that you are asking this!
People own thoroughbreds cos they are good horses! and that is a big generalization on a breed that is very popular!
I had an ex racer who i evented, he was truely amazing had such a lovely attitude to life, dressage he was amazing always got good scores and complimented, showjumping he was honest and never ran out and cross country he was unbeatable!
He was not only amazing at eventing he was ultra safe but with a fun quirk to him, and i cant even say he was one in a million as i know a few people with tb's who are just as lovely.
He was fully clipped and lived out in the winter with a bit of chaff and hay/haylage he cost less than my connie.
They have trainable attitudes and actually some have amazing paces!
They are also quite cheap to buy (especially young ex racers) so i never think of someone who owns a tb as a snob!
I am shocked at what you have said, if you were a true horse person you would not slate a beautiful and athletic breed that is the thoroughbred or any breed of horse they all have there positives and negatives.

I have a tb and yes, shes really sensitive and has allergies and yes, she needs lots of rugging up but:
- we have never had any lameness *touches wood*
- She's really forward going (hate lazy horses! I don't know why any one would want to own one!
- She's talented
- shes just the right size for me
- I personally prefer finer horses- look daintier!

I have seen quite a few horrible looking tbs though.

I like to think that a TB is the mongrel of all horse breeds, I mean that in a nice way btw.

Because they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, different personalities, strengths and weaknesses, but over they all can do anything and usually do it well and to the high level.

So the question is, why would you not want to own a TB? :D

You shouldn't tar all Thoroughbred's with the same brush, yes some can be a bit tricky to look after but there are horses of all breeds that are hard to look after.

My thoroughbred has a LW rug on, only fed hard feed once a day, and has hay the rest of it. Very sound horse, the only supplement she has is mud-x :)

I love TB's and think they are fab, yes mine was expensive to keep and high maintance, but then so can lots of other breeds. I would love to get another one, but think i'll be getting a navtive as my next horse as want something that will be happy to go without shoes and live out 24/7.

Presumably because they are feeling unhealthily rich and wish to subtly donate some money to their local vet

I think JT would agree with that, even though her mare is gorgeous and loveable :p

I have had 2 both been very good doers requiring little in the way of feed or rugs tbh!
I just like them and they are cheap to buy! Mine costs no more than my big Irish hunter type to keep but would cost a damn site less to buy the same horse again.

Because they are beautiful, intelligent horses. Mine wins every open showing class against all other breeds and ive been told she is stunning. she is like a gentle lamb with my nine year old child. She is the first TB ive owned after ponies and dutch warmbloods and i have never looked back. Hopefully your original post was tongue in cheek if not wind your neck in and get your facts straight first ..............

Thoroughbreds aren't my cup of tea but everyone has their preferred breeds and each to their own i say, every horse is unique no matter what the breed :)
