Why do people wear their silk pushed back on a skull cap ??

You look like a tool if you ride with it down imo,and it flops about pathetically as you ride.

Haha! Truer words were never spoken.

Well, then I'd better give up riding daily :rolleyes3:
Mine IS well pulled down, we go through lots of woodland here & its easy to get a cover swiped off particularly if already at half-mast.
What isn't so easy is to read idiotic comments by others.
I had absolutely NO idea that I could be judged by other people in such a condescending way :rolleyes3:
Ladies, please think before you post

So just to clarify...if I move my silk to further up my hat I will immediately become an awesome rider and no longer be a beginner/tool?? Excellent. That will save me a fortune on trainers fees. And what is required to turn my horse into Valegro? A jaunty rug angle perhaps??

Most definately about the hat cover. You also need a furry headband when not riding.
Just go out & enter advanced dressage, then the locals will look on you in awe :)

I have to say, I wasn't aware so much controversy existed over silk hat cover angles... Mine doesn't full cover my hat because it's a bit small but that's about it... doesn't make me a better rider or anything!

Half a dead sheep draped around your horse - everyone knows that horses with a shedload of sheepskin do better at dressage...

My silk is a lycra silk is so stretchy I think it would cover any hat. I pull it right down on my Champion Ventair because I wear a hi viz hat band which I think would look a bit silly and also wouldn't stay on for very long if my silk was halfway up my hat.

I don't mind being a tooly beginner.

I'm slightly surprised at how many people have problems with blocked vision / flapping peaks / whatever; I've been wearing mine exactly on the rim (not below it) for my entire 25+ years of riding (clearly like a beginner).

Can't we all just agree to differ and stop bickering / caring? Us peak-down types won't judge the rest of you for being poseurs / failing to have the sort of attention to detail that means your hat cover covers your hat, and in return you peak-up types don't judge us for missing the fashion memo / clearly never jumping anything higher than 2'6".

I can remember when I was a kid I always used to ride with the silk up a bit at the front. Back then it was because I used to fancy Steve Cauthen and copied his look. It would have been nice if the angle of the silk could have made me ride like Steve Cauthen but alas it wasn't to be.

My first hat was a velvet fixed peak with cork lining. However since safer hats were introduced I have worn a skull cap and velvet cover. I ride, like Xmas Furry, in woodland, so all my covers are well stitched on. I would be buying a new cover every week otherwise! Of course, as I make sure all the hat is covered by the velvet, it explains why after nearly 50 years of riding why I am still a novice.....

See, mine does that because the elastic Has gone and its ancient :D pretty much the opposite of 'all the gear' hahaha! Just too cheap to buy a new one, but then again- I don't really wear my hat for what it looks like, I hate the damned thing and only wear it cause I have to!!

I have just bought a new Charles owen and am now concerned I will be judged as I'm pretty sure they design the silks provided like that! Oh well- in a bid to detract judgement of noviceness based on hat silks alone- take a look at the photo in this thread- now THAT screams beginner! And that horse was out hunting!

This really has made me chuckle, I ride far to many horses most days, have far to many stables to far and far to many jobs to do to even think about why somebody wears the silk like they do and in fact if I shut my eyes I prob couldn't tell you who at the yard was wearing what as its not my concern and really doesn't matter. Those saying " all the gear, no idea type" and whip in boots shows a novice..... Really! It's people like that I really wouldn't want on the yard as they obviously have all the time in the world to wonder these things plus Its prob these people that have no idea themselves but are the yards know it alls

Agree with thatsmygirl ^^^ There are some strange people out there! Rather like the fellow liveries you always get who hate it when things are going well for you and your horse, yet love it when things go wrong and then proceed to gossip and spread it around the yard this so called 'dreadfull incident' on your horse, which actually was just having an off day FGS!! (Brilliant not being at a livery yard now!)

I might just start a new fashion, I'm going to get a big pair of kitchen scissors and lop my peak off. I am going 'peakless'

Not a new trend I,m afraid. Back in the early 70 s when we had to start wearing crash hats to exercise racehorses ,pretywell everyone didnt have a silk .

Yes of course-revive the trend then.
