Decide to give other peoples ponies bread!!!! It's so bad for them. If they feel the need to feed my pony then please buy a bale of hay, that'd be great!!!

I've seen people giving it to other peoples horses too, they just pull up by the roadside and get out to give the horse some bread. Very odd!

I found some left overs in our pony's field today, currently making some signs to go on the gate in the hope they'll stop it. (I do feed the pony!)

In an old yard I used to be at people used to throw allsorts over the fence, cabbage, potatoe skins, bread we had signs up all round saying it could kill ! still it happened - only good thing for me was there were much more dominent horses in the field than mine so they never got any of it.

LOL - I used to keep my horses in a very touristy "honeypot" area and I often found a little pile of sugar lumps on the gate post that people (kids) had scrounged from the tea rooms! I too put up signs on the gates in the end very politely asking people not to feed the horses

May be a silly question but why is bread so bad for horses? I don't feed any to our horses but i know the lady who we bought our mare from used to feed her bread all the time.

Why is it bad for them?

Our YO used to get the bread that wasn't sold from the local baker and put it in our horses feeds.
Out of 60+ horses, none came to any harm

... in fact, their coats were fantastically shiney

I'v heard its bad for them in large quantities on a regular basis. My boy loves a bit of bread and will eat it 1st if i give him a bit in his feed. Why is it bad for them?, as if there is a good reason then i will avoid letting him have anymore.

To be fair the odd slice prob won't kill her, it's more people turning up and feeding what they like without knowing anything about her dietary needs etc.

I was always told that bread is high in carbohydrates, and very low in fibre. If bread makes up a large part of the diet, the risk of laminitis and colic is increased. Bread also contains a large amount of gluten, which when wet forms a sticky ball that can cause choke, colic and possibly impactions. Feeding too much bread may lead to behavioural and clinical problems like with high grain diets.

This is prob an over reaction to people throwing in the odd slice but I still find it annoying that people feel the need to do it when it's unecessary. If nothing else the pony can be quite spolit with tit bits (not by me) and I'm trying to discourage her as she bit my husband the other day trying to get into his pocket (least is was only him!).

Maybe I'm just turning into a grumpy old wotsit!

my mums friends horse died because someone threw lots of bread into her field left over from the bakers and it swelled in her stomach!
i dont tend to give mine bread but im sure a slice or 2 wont hurt every now and then, mine do love donuts tho but they dnt get them often

Thanks for that, so i'm ok to still give him the odd bit from the end of a loaf now and again

Can definately understand your gripe with other people feeding random titbits though, i'v had to ask other livery not to feed mine titbits as he was getting quite nippy and she didnt understand why he kept pulling faces at her if she went past empy handed when i was around.

So your not a grumpy old wotsit :grin

Sure it's fine, they do love it, suppose it's like us and chocolate!!

That's a relief!!! She's very little, cute and friendly so I can see why she get's the titbits, I'm sure she does a very good impression of a pony in desperate need of a snack
