...Bread from lame/naughty/just not very good mares???

It does make me wonder. A friend of my mums has 2 failed hunter mares, one won't jump a stick, the other has had several problems with her legs and so has had to be retired early, both haven't got the best looks/conformation and have unknown breeding.... why bread from them????

Will someone please tell me??

Sentimental value?? Not, in my opinion, a good reason to breed a horse especially when bad conformation could potentially cause problems to the foal. Does this friend plan to keep the foals? Cause if not I too ask why breed from them!!?

Goodness only knows..
Anything that doesn't jump/ is nervous or dreadful conformation really shouldn't be bred from, but people do!
Our mares are either all good competition bloodlines, have siblings who perform well or have competed themselves.
We discovered many years ago the better the mare, the better the offspring.. Look at the pic of Jacques in the gallery. That four year old is the result of putting two really good bloodlines together from proven animals and then putting that offspring out to a proven advanced eventing sire. (Cruising type line/Frere Jacques a Tb who produced many decent horses then offspring put to Matinee du Madon..)
looking at the pic you would say it had worked I think!
Hopefully the genes and performance will show as he competes..at least if you try to use decent animals you should get a head start instead of using crap...

my horses parents dont have ''brill conformation and looks and talent'' nor my colt that im gettin next month and their worth their weight in gold to me!!!!!!

my colts mum wontbe caught by anyone but her owner and shes a 19 yr old new forest type, always been a brood mare never really been handled and you should see her 10 foals that are now grown up!!! alot better than these 10K horses!!!
this is my moggy colt!!

Ok got to do it
bread = stuff you eat; makes good sandwiches
breed = the word you were after!

Anyway - in answer, no idea, we decided to breed from our mare as she had a fab temprement, jumped 3ft 6" and was an all round star. However we've also refused to sell all offspring, so wasn't for economic reasons either!

I guess people have a crap mare that not worth much, cross her with something fancy and then are guaranteed 2k for the foal.

ha ha ha mine aren't even crossed with fancy stallions!!!
*holds head low*

but i will say my cob Bear has got a temperment to die for, he's only 4 and my friends 9 year old rides him!!

Cause they have a womb.

I have no problem with people breeding a mare with a great temperment, but one who is nasty or useless shouldn't have babies.

i can understand it if a mare is ''lame'' etc... but why the hell not if their sound and pretty and good mums with nice temperments?

some people are so narrow minded!!!

i know loads of horses that aren't perfected in their breeding etc and they are lovely good working horses!!!

i know a man with a 15.2 chestnut cob, he's not got any special breeding but can jump likea stag, he got offered 6K for him!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the point of the post was to highlight the fact that they were suitable in temprament ie 'wont jump a stick' with what i can only assume are significant limb deformaties.
Dont brand me as narrow minded as i'm sick to the back teath of people breeding crap from crap, that envitably ends up in sale ring in some god awful place.

i don't think we are saying that, well, I wasn't, I was saying more if a horse is ugly, lame and/or cr*p, why have a baby?

We've got a fabby horse with an unknown mum and dad, and because he is great at his job, sound, fit, and not too bad to look at, if he was a girl

He'd be worth breading from... but why bread from not very good horses??

Because they think it is the 'easy' answer to what to do with horsey and make a quick buck on the way!

Cotswolds, thanks for the spelling lesson, bugs me too
