It's so annoying - just spotted a 148cms pony with a nice technique who has done some affiliated jumping on a well known horse sales site. The pony's name is mentioned as is it's age - 12yo. I immediately go to the BSJA website and pop in the name and low and behold the pony is actually 15yo.

This happens time and time again. Am I the only person who now wouldn't trust the vendors as far as I could throw them if they've told porkies about something that can be so easily checked out?

I would trust dealers at all in my experience.

I had a friend who went to try a lovely horse and her parents bought the horse for her xmas- on xmas morning it was another horse the delivered pretending in was the one she wanted!

i know someone who bought one recently. She was told he was 12 but he's really 17! She only bought him because she couldnt leave him there though - he was in a mess

they insisted it was the same horse! despite the fact four of us knew it wasnt. In the end she kept horse that had been delivered.

sorry measles misunderstood, no idea why a seller would bother lying and potentially put people off when its obviously a decent enought pony, and tbh not much difference between 12 and 15.

Surely when owner got passport age would be on it?

I bought one of mine described as a 6 year old, when the vet came to vaccinate him he said he was 4...................it didn't matter much to me, explained a few things though !

I don't think you can tar all dealers with the same brush tbh....Most are really decent, it's the con ones that bring the entire business down, and it's quite unfair IMO.

agreed , just like you cant tar all tradesmen with the same brush, however i have yet to meet a dealer who is honest, and have had some very bad experiences with them.

Sorry you've had a bad experience. The one I bought my horse from was truly wonderful. Infact, she doesn't even advertise as her customers are very loyal and keep coming back for more. A friend has been buying all his hunters off her for years!

It could well be genuinely 12 years old, but they lied about its age when they got it measured for its life height i.e. a 4 year old will still grow, but if they say it is 7, then it can have a life height ...

How old was it when it started competing according to the records?

I bought my first horse from a dealer but a small one, and he was young and I paid proper money for him.

Hes been everything he was described as and I would certainly have gone back to her if I was looking for the same type again but the second horse was an unbroken filly so got her direct from her breeders..

so there are good ones out there, but wont be a 'bargain price'

The BSJA website isn't always accurate either, 2 of my friends horses ages are wrong (well one is wrong and the other one has died, but isn't listed as deceased even though they were informed). If you search by age alone on horse search you'll see that there are quite a few horses that are 100 years old!

Thats not to say that the people advertising are def honest, just that i would be tempted to ask them about the age difference and see what they say- just be sceptical!

Very true - hadn't thought of that.

My friend found a horse she fell in love with at a dealers, then got it vetted and turned out it was blind in one eye. The sellers knew and 2 or 3 potential buyers before her had vetted it already to find out about its blindness, but the dealers were waiting for someone to be stupid enough not to get it vetted. Poor horse.
And i bought my horse from i dealer that i know really well, and her instructor had taught me for nearly 7 years. He seemed perfect, but within a week he was rearing. Now i don't trust any dealer, whatever their reputation!
However i do know a couple of dealers who are very good and honest, and i know people who have been really happy with their horses.
