Why do so many horse owners only ride 45mins a day and even then think its alot?

TBH I couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks about how long I ride my horse for, and I couldn't care less about how long anyone else rides theirs for.
MY horse, MY business. Pffft.

PS the fact I am recovering from a cyst on my spine means I can't ride for as long as I used to. But I still don't have to justify myself to anyone nor should anyone else have to justify themselves to me!

i ride for however long it takes me to achieve what i set out to do.....

i dont normally ride unless i have upto an hour to spare lol! as in case i need to spend more time achving the goal.....

but as shes 4 i try to limit riding for 30 mins 4 x a week.... and tbh it works for us. I do lunge too as well as long rein and im trying to work her 6x a week - she goes out most days in the field too

and no.....i dont care for what others think about how long i do or dont ride for!.... :)

calm down forum members, im only asking why people think that 45 mins is enough, i do work have kids and 4 horses. You lot are soooo sensitive, and sssso easy to wind up.

Didn't take you long to acquire all those horses only a few days ago you posted this about getting your first horse:

Thank you for advice, I will turn away for around 12 months but she is going to be on a yard so will have a daily routine but nothing taxing for her.

I would like advice from novices and experienced owners as everyone has different experiences.

I mentioned my experience so people wouldnt think I was a numpty getting my first horse.

haven't read all posts, I don't have a sandschool to use at my yard. I only ride 30 mins a day hacking as my pony is barefoot and I don't want her to be footsore. She is a rescue pony & due to past problems cannot have shoes

I dont get it, it seems people think they should only ride their horse for an hour or less a day otherwise its too much for the horses!!!!!!!!

What a load of tosh, if you want a fit healthy horse you should ride as much as possible especially if they are stabled 24/7.

Also I read all the time of lunging for a max of 20 mins, for goodness sake that should be the warm up period. Dont get me wrong if your not lunging correctly then 20 mins is about right for the horses sake.

I dont know where this all misinformation comes from, any ideas?

Hmmm it very much depends on the level of schooling tbh, a horse schooled for 45mins in prelim/novice work is not going to be working as hard as a horse schooled in medium/advanced work. Also like to add that 20 mins lunging is harder work than 20 mins ridden, anymore than that can cause strain on limbs etc.

To be fair it is no one else's business how long a horse is ridden for, and many, if not most people do have to work!

Dear me OP!!! If you're so busy "looking after 4 horses and your kids" AND riding each of your 4 horses for more than 45 mins a day (45 x 4 horses = 3 hours), how come you've got TIME to waste inventing stupid posts and "winding people up"?????

Some people really need to get a life. And learn to spell. "Alot" is not a word!!!!

If you want a fit healthy horse, don't stable it for 24 hours a day. Time spent in the saddle means nothing, its what you do when you're riding that keeps them fit and healthy.
45 minutes of varied and quality work will keep a horse healthier than 4 hours of bad riding.

Not read through the whole thread.

I would say surely it depends on what you are doing in that 45 mins, if your are riding for example a sound horse in his prime, schooling on a soft surface could take more out of one horse than another say on few hour hack, its really not as black and white or as simple as you put it, yes some horses don't get pushed, maybe some have never acheived there optimum fitness, but people do as they wish or have time for, some horses just don't have the same stamina as others, race horses for example is a good way of looking at it.

Just a note for the dopey ones, my previous thread did not indicate i was getting my first horse but that i wasnt a numpty getting my first horse. I DO HAVE 2 horses and kids so get your facts straight Double_choc_lab,

dont have TIME to read through all these posts but tbh i could not give one toss what other people do in their own time as long as no harm is being done. I have a busy life full of things that need doing (including a horse) OP I suggest you concern yourself with your own business and stay out of other peoples.....

Ach, I don't bother with fittening work.....can't be fazed....

I'll just jump on the ned on Saturday, thrash her round the bridleways for about 5 hours at a gallop then bung her back in the field again.

Might do the same again in 6 months time.....

Thank you for the rude PM. I'm not the only one confused about how many horses you have.

BTW you're the only person to call me a T****r. But hey you learn something new all the time.

I don't think OP is considering the time factor..... It wasn't a question of time she was generally gasping at people thinking its too much work for a horse 45 minutes in the school/20 mins on lunge etc.

Whats an all day pub hack for in summer? And why shouldn't you lunge your horse for more than 20 minutes, you trot them round and round in a school for longer than that don't you? I usually make my lunging a bit fun, with poles, transitions then a bit of a loose school to have a whooppeee it doesn't have to be all about the mind set of work... you can actually have fun whilst your getting your horses fit, some people make the whole thing sound like a chore? I love owning horses please people ENJOY THEM!!!

where on earth do you find the time to stopwatch other peoples leisure time then/ Get a grip woman.

She sounds like a charmer!

Mummy Troll's legs must be REALLY tired after leading OP on her pony for more than 45 mins.

Read the first page and got bored.

Why is everyone trying to justify how/when/etc they exercise their horses? Everyone should do what is right for THEM and sod everyone else.

And, this is important, too many people have their horses too fit for what they do, and then complain that their horse is too *on their toes*.

I think spending longer than 45 mins on a schooling session is actually unfair on a horse, and far too wearing on them to boot.

Hear, Hear!

Well OP hasn't bothered to answer my perfectly reasonable question regarding what they think is appropriate so I can only assume they don't actually have a clue :p

I quite agree jnb, as long as horse is fit enough to do whatever job it does from lawnmower to hunter, thats fine. Besides which, after 45mins of hard work schooling, I've had enough too!!;)

when Sov was still alive 45 minutes hack was her limit....but she was 38!

My others would often go out for 6 or 7 hours a day hacking with my kids riding and me on foot, they were very fit in those days as the kids rode everyday. these days horses and kids older, lack of time, disabled son and a house to run mean I am lucky if I can nick a pony for 10 minutes before I have to rush off to get homes for my son.

the life you lead totally dictates the time you have for riding. I spend 3 hours a day at my stables, but by the time I have finished my jobs its almost time to go home :(

Agreed.

I wish I had time to ride 45 mins every day. I'd probably just hack out in that time, but if I did it every day I'm sure I'd have a nicely fit horse. (And he's be less spooky too!).

some people are lucky to make even 45mins a day, what with work, children or injury..

is the op being judgemental or is it a genuine query about people thinking a horse has had enough after 45mins? 45 mins of what though? hacking round? intensive schooling?

im sure most owners would know the workload that suits their horses. i got my exracer and got a lot of load of snide comments when i was only riding him 20 mins a day at the start. It drove me mad, as I knew myself 20 mins was all he could manage for schooling then. Everyones horse is different, and a heavier person on a smaller or older horse might be well right in thinking 45 mins is enough.

plus some days if he is going well and has learned something new, i'd often cut a session short to end on a good note, instead of pushing him that bit too far.

drives me mad when people judge others!

Totally agree! I am bringing my TB back into work after an op and find that although he seems fine with 40 mins schooling, he is better if I only do it every other day and give him a day off inbetween. Mind you, I do have 6 stabled horses to single handedly look after and also do lessons, exercis the liveries and all the housework, washing and cooking!

45 minutes schooling is plenty for any horse. I think it is the OP who is misinformed. I feel sorry for her horse.
