Is it basically that they don't suit the shape of your horse?

I've just bought a DH fleece with neck to go under T/O rugs when required - bright pink but my gelding is all man lol

However, it really pulls back on his chest and ends up down his bum.

Is this because it doesn't fit him? Because it's under another rug and that's pulling it back? Something to do with the material? It's cheap?

Anything I can do to stop this i.e pull the fleece front straps over the other rug or will this make it worse? Someone suggested that surcingles are good for stopping this but I've never used one??

Or shall I just sell it on ebay and try another make?

The most common cause of rugs slipping back is when they are too big around the neck i.e too long from the front buckles to the wither. You could try sewing a tuck on each shoulder, far enough back that it doesnt rub on the shoulder.

TBH a cheap fleece is maybe not ideal as a Turnout under-rug as it is so lightweight & will not hold its shape however well it fits. You will end up with horrid shoulder rubs. A thinner type quilt would be a better option

I agree with Joss, fleeces under TO rugs often dom't work that well. I think you have to be lucky with the cut & quality of the fleece, and it probably depends on the lining of your TO rug too (some linings would tend to pull the fleece more). When I have tried using them before, I looped the chest straps through the straps on the TO but it disn't make much difference and the rug still went really tight round the front.

I like the amigo stable rugs underneath TO rugs - I have the lighter one (150g?) underneath a mediumweight TO when it is v cold and that works really well. It has nylon lining and nylon outer as well, so it doesn't stick to the horse and the TO rug can slide over it as necessary.

Thanks for replies - had a feeling it was because it is a fleece more than anything else - don't have any problem with the 200g MT under-rug I use for when it's v cold.

I actually have the 150g Amigo stable rug so I could use that as a 'lighter' under-rug, thanks for idea, Amigo fits him perfectly.

I think I just liked the idea of the fleece as it wasn't too thick and it had a neck too.

I could have a go at putting a couple of darts in it but knowing my sewing skills I think it will be best if I just stick it on Ebay

Fleece will creep down the back because of the lie of the hair..... ie smooth in one direction, backwards, and prickly in the other..... forwards

I turned out once with a fleece under the rug to keep the liner clean and it rubbed his shoulders within one days turnout

He now wears the rambo duo liners under any rug he has on, and has never had a rub since
