hi all bought 7 month old colt in dec wormed him with euest and he shed loads of pin worms 4 weeks later more adult pin worms so he was wormed with pramox few weeks later worms were still present. i contacted vet the suggest giving wormer up the bum3 weeks later living worms still coming out in his poo so vet gave me 5 day panacur whic he had in jan today i went to poo pick and i find pin worms in his poo again there must of been 30 fully grown pin worms wriggling in one poo. i dont understand how he can be reinfected as i moved him to an untouched ungrazed field he hasnt been stabled and his bum was free of any eggs. i have some 5 day panacur here will he be ok to worm again with this if he had his last wormer in jan. which was the 5 daay panacure

Might be an utterly stupid patronising question, but are you sure they are internal parasites from the horse ...... poo left in a field has other worms in it sometimes......... no idea what they are called lol

lol yes i waited at the field to catch him pooing when i saw them in 1 of the poos. 20 mins of waiting i saw him pooing so went over and there they were all wriggling and leaking yellow liquid all over the poo and grass which i pursume were the eggs

ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww you know what i meant tho didn't you about those rotted poos in the field!! haha!

Sounds like resistance to wormer or not targeting the correct worms? Can you take a sample into vets and show them? Sounds like a heavy burden X

think im going to have to take one into the vets defenetly pin worms as i put 1 to aside when vet came out in jan to check him over.

i would ask the vet to give a dose of their 'secret' wormer by injection;) it's not liscensed for horses so they don't advertise it and my vet uses it only when he feels it's really necessary to help stop resistance. we're hoping it works though as my friends youngster has been wormed every 8 weeks since last sept and she is still finding redworm and roundworm in his poo 6 weeks after worming:rolleyes:

Pinworms can be blighters to shift, mine had them earlier this year and the double pyratape didn't shift them, although luckily a dosing afterwards with Equest did.

I think I'd give your vet a ring, they might be able to suggest something more effective.

Increased resistance. Normal wormers even though they are supposedly active against pin worms are not.

I had problems couple of years ago - several 5 day panacur about three months apart sorted it the issue. Had to disinfect everything as well to stop re-infection as I was not lucky enough to have somewhere else to move him to.

There have also been several previous threads on HHO re pinworms which have useful into. I am sure if you search for them you'll find them

Best of luck!

Reply by Perissa interesting response re above

thanks for the replies i will phone vets on tuesday see what they can do or suggest they are a nightmare to get rid of. never had problems b4 with any worms and theres only my horse and another on the land so its not like we have loads of horses to spread worms. we have sheep grazing in the fieldsto help keep eggs at bay.

with pin worm the eggs are outside the horse under the tail and all around the anus cos they come out at night to lay the eggs,i believe you need to paint the area with ivermectin liquid to kill them and disinfect all grooming brushes etc

sorry forgot to add the pin worms life cycle is 5 months so can be hard to get rid of ! also if they itch their bums on drinkers or wooden fences they can be reinfected and all horses that graze the same field have to be done together
