Why do you need more than one horse?

I had one TB in his 20's so got another younger one to compete on. After the old boy was put down & the 'younger' one was now 20 I got another younger one!!

It's just so handy as I've always got something to ride - that's the theory anyway but it doesn't always work out like that!!

I don't NEED more than 1. I suppose I don't even need 1! I just can't seem to help it. Got a Dales who absolutely hated being ridden. Let her do her thing - having babies. Got another horse, to ride. So I've got 1 that I ride, 1 broodmare, plus 2 of her offspring. I really need to sell the babies...

I only have 1 to ride at the moment, but she has a bun in the oven, so I am now desperate for another.
I usually have an older horse for fun and a younger one to bring on. I would be bored riding the same horse all the time.
 
I've got 3, but only one I can ride. I have my retired mare who is 26. I've had her 18 years and happily spends her days tarting at the boys next door!! I bought a foal to work with and bring on as my old mare was doing less, she is now 5 and my riding horse. I also have a shetland pony as a companion pony for my old mare when I take the youngster to shows.
 
I always seem to end up with three and that really is the most difficult number of horses to have! Currently my own mare, the horse I look after (treat as my own) in return for the yard and daughters pony.

Sister and I had four until three weeks ago, one each to ride and two retired ladies, since the old girl was PTS we have both been sneekily looking at adverts! We both keep saying that we must stop it, three are enough, BUT we have an empty stable....
 
Ive got two, and find it a struggle riding both each day with a family, hence i have decided to sell my lovely pre novice horse... very sad but will be much less pressure with just one.

Anyway I've now got two as W is knocking on 16 and not likely to get to the standard of dressage that I'd like and his feet are his nemessis but I would never part with him. I got Cat to bring on and take me several steps further hopefully.
Both horses are very different and are teaching me new stuff as well. I love the fact that I can get on Will and go anywhere without worrying about what he might do and yet Cat is so unspoiled without hangups. I'm really enjoying them at the moment in spite of the xtra work/expense

I've never just had one horse and wouldn't ever want to just have one. I enjoy having lots of horses; they're all different to ride and I have different relationships with them all. I have the land to accommodate as many horses as I choose to have; so I have as many as I want. Quite simple.

Because one pony needs a companion!
I have 3, (well, 5, but two are on perm. loan)
One is my daughters, and the bigger one is mine because I fell in love with him.
Magic will always be with me, far too special a pony to sell. (She was my first purchase when i ran the RS and now she is with me)
Doesn't do much and is too young to retire sill be having a holiday with someone for fun then coming home.

I need to, but the confidence was shattered somewhat and although the heart says, get on, the brain stops me.
But, I love being around them and watching them being ridden

Cos I'm not very good at selling them! Seriously we have daughters first pony who has Cushings so can't really sell (or wouldn't), then her 2nd pony who has been out on loan but has had a leg fracture and is 19 so is not going anywhere now, then daughters horse who is the only really useful one at the moment! And of course the donkey, who I have had for 21 years, got him originally as a companion for my old pony, who needless to say he outlived. I am lucky that we have our own land, though not enough, and stables, so am able to indulge myself.

two a old pensioners one being 29 and the other 33!
then we have my old cob ive had since i was 11, he is 17 now
then we have two that we compete on 16hh tb and 17 hh hunter
 
I'd only ever have one horse for my personal use - though in an ideal world I'd have some sort of companion too. I think in a non-competitive (or infrequently competitive!) environment, you can devote more time to just one horse. Imagine going out for a 3 hour hack on one, then knowing you've got to go back and do it all again on another when you get home...
when I had 5 ponies at once, there were always favourites, and always one that I never wanted to 'do'. This, to me, is simply not fair on the horse!
 
Well I did get one for my husband to ride, but since his fall he has lost interest. I do dressage on it now. Also means my sister can ride mine and we can hack out together. Going to get a third so I can take 2 eventing, as it means I get more practice and have a good day out.
 
It makes life simpler if you're on DIY - they're never left on their own!
I so don't need 2, but it just seems to have turned out that way. I had an oldie and bought a youngster when he started to show signs of arthritis. The idea was that he could retire when she was broken in. Of course he had other ideas, so I had a sharer to keep him amused!! 12 years on I still have the youngster.

When the oldie was PTS 3 years ago, I had already bought yet another horse. I now have the two, both on full livery so the being left thing isn't an issue any more. Trouble is I love them both dearly, so I'm stuck with them!!!

I have three horses too...

One IDxTB 11 year old who has just bred a lovely colt and is now back in work and starting competing again, on WBxTB 6 year old who is now on box rest as she has acute damage to her suspensory ligament (that is the good thing about having two to ride, if one is out of action you still have one to ride) and one 8 months old colt

I like having 2 horses and usually have had more than 1 at any one time. I like having a "fun" horse who I can bomb about on (my Welsh D) and who makes me laugh all the time, and I have my more "serious" horse who does the BE and BSJA. Its good to have 2 because it means I dont have to use the same horse every weekend for events, they get breaks as its sort of time-about. Plus, when I gave mine 2 months off holiday a year then what would I ride if I didnt have another?! :P
