Why do you use a whip?

Only carry one with Blu when I jump her. She gets one slap down the shoulder if she stops and then a tap on approach to remind her that we are going over.

I use a whip to:
Open and shut gates
Push branches out of the way
Used behind the leg when horse is ignoring me
Used down the shoulder if scary jump / they are not going well
Used on the bottom if they are being very rude, which is rare
Fly swat
Smack passing cars that go too fast

Carry and use a schooling whip to back up the leg in case madam gets spooky or decides to plant, which for a forward going animal she does quite a lot!

Don't usually ride with one but when I do it's to back up my leg aid.

If I'm leading a little kiddie I like to have a stick with me because I'm not a fan of swinging the leg up.

Just purely interested.I used mine quite a lot this weekend to convning the big one that I was going to keep him moving. I don't use on the the big lad at all really, he doesn't like it. Use it on the youngster occasionally to encourage him to move (schooling whip)

Same as Enfys; I haven't ridden with a whip for years and years, but I also ride with very long reins therefore if I ever needed to gain the horse's full attention, I could and once in a while I do, however it is literally a light gentle flick as this is all that is necessary for any of mine.

Usually used to remove flies from those hard to reach places, pony would be most upset if I didn't get rid of them.
Also pushing branches out of the way or helping with gates gates when hacking. When he was younger he used to rear and nap so he would get a sharp tap on the shoulder with it.

When schooling a light tap behind the leg if he's not listening to my leg or sometimes placed down shoulder to help if he is falling in/out.

I find carrying on quite useful, my boy is happy for me to wave it about/ touch him anywhere with it.

dont use one on solo. a growl is enough to move him on if he gets nappy- its only half hearted napping.
use one on red tho- its only a jumping whip but he can be stubborn- unless bf gets on, he goes into riding school horse then!

I never use one, I have no need, but have nothing against their use when needed and used properly.

I'd a friend who thought riding was cruel, she went ballistic when she found out I carried a whip, so I told her it was for beating the horse till it bled...

I was told to carry a whip when I was learning to ride, it just became a habit really

I was alway told it's better to carry a whip and not need it, than not carry one and need it.

I carty a whip to back up my leg aids but also when hacking alone in case I come across any dodgy characters and to encourage cars to give us adequate room when they are passing us.
